Its all gone a bit Pete Tong - I will try to keep it brief

I have had a particularly nasty flare up of my diverticulitis - I am in agony and have been for a few days - had complications in June last year when I was admitted to hospital with abscesses on my bowels - this is when they also discovered my diabetes. I am terrified this is happening again although the pain that time was different from other times along with other stuff going on

Now my quandary - the diet recommendations during a flare up are no fibre such as veg fruit nuts grains in bread etc no cheese dairy or meats- basically I should be eating bananas white bread and plain pasta - all stuff I never eat now for obvious reasons!!
I need to eat and I am struggling apart from scrambled egg (which makes me retch at the best of times) plain chicken and white fish what else can you suggest.

My BS have been all over the place - I had a 50 g plate of plain pasta last night (I was desperate!)with a chicken breast and was still 9.7 3 hrs later never had a test this high since early diagnosis - checked again 11/2 hrs later just before bed and was 3.2!! - no hypo signs which is very very unusual.

What would you do - bite the bullet and treat the diverticulitis and put up with high numbers for a few days or try to do both at the same time?

Funnily enough what I think set this off was a particularly low carb day where I had yogurt and berries for breakfast, salad for lunch and a mild chili with celeriac chips for dinner half hour after dinner world war 3 inside my tummy :(

I usually eat to my meter with about 100 - 130g carbs a day low GI

Sorry wasn't very brief but I tried

Hi lovinglife
You have my sympathy as I suffer diverticulitis and have done for many years but am one of the lucky ones, in that mine has settled down over the years, but do get tender around the stomache every now and then.
Hopefully someone else who suffers this will be able to help you.

Hello Lovinglife,

No experience to offer but just a <<hug>> and hope you will feel better soon. :)

I don't see how you can do anything other than look after the tum primarily. :(

Hi
Ive to go for an colonoscopy to query diverticular probs and I totally sympathise cause I know that this is what you need to eat when you have flare ups

The low residue diet has just about EVERTHING on it I wont eat either. I have cancelled one test already but of course as an insulin user the diabetic nurse you can call thinks that there is 'no reason' why I shouldnt have cornflakes, rice, pasta, OJ etc etc

Yes, cept from the fact that they are TOXIC to me. I know doing the diet for 8 days wont kill me, but I dont do well with higher bg, physically or indeed mentally so I truly do understand

Only thing I can suggest is bland stuff, cheeses, eggs, proteins and maybe white bread (not actually any worse carb wise than some brown fibrous breads) and wing it for the duration as you need to reduce your pain (which after all affects bg via stress and also quality of life)

Sending you good wishes

I feel for you, I know exactly what it is like to have a diverticulitis flare up :(
Would a small amount of brown rice be okay to eat, as you will needing some fibre in your diet.
I take Fybogel which helps bulk things up a bit and helps keep things moving in the right direction.
When I had my last flare up ( I don't have many) I just ate bland food and some veggie soup I made myself. How about 50/50 or oatmeal bread?

thanks everyone for the replies - I am a bit better though now I have the monthlys on top so pain is all melding into one  - I did give in yesterday and have some mashed potato with a little milk and butter with my fish and it wasn't too disastrous for my BS :) and things are moving again if you know what I mean

Have managed today on a lot less pain relief so its going in the right direction - but I miss my veggies :( will try some tomorrow - I am lucky that I can tolerate porridge in small amounts so have manged quite well at breakfast - I take regulan everyday too coca - but sometimes if its got to bite its got to bite  I did some thinking back and looking through my food diary and it seems when I eat less than normal carbs for me (about 30g- 40g a meal) I get the constipation and tender tummy but this is my first big flare up since the abscesses

feeling a lot less sorry for myself anyway - again thanks all :)
