Hi I've been told by my docs that I have to check my blood sugars 3 times a day type 2 diabetic is this normal as would told type 2 don't normally due that.

This morning before my breakfast it was 7.6

I had 2 weetabix with soya milk an sweetner it then shot upto 12.5 after two hours

Please any advice what I can have for breakfast as it seems no matter what I'm eating its bringing my blood sugars up

Any advice greatly recieved

Hi @Jojo240874 , and welcome to the forum!
Here is our information piece for newly diagnosed members, it's very useful.
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.26870/

Carbs or carbohydrates make our blood sugar rise, so many of us choose foods with less carbs. For instance bacon and eggs for breakfast, an omelet instead of a sandwich and cauliflower instead of rice or pasta.

Can you tell us a bit more about your diabetes? Especially if you are on any medication?

I'll tag @JoKalsbeek for you, she has lots of good advice on food :)

I test before and after meals e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Weetabix are poison to T2 diabetics as they are full of carbs.
Please any advice what I can have for breakfast as it seems no matter what I'm eating its bringing my blood sugars up

Bacon, eggs, mushrooms are among my favourites for breakfast as they are low carb.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I see that @Antje77 has already given you a useful link.

In relation to testing my thoughts (as a needle phobic) are that regular testing (before meals and 2 hrs after the first bite) is the only way for me to get the information I need to make good choices about what I eat.
Diabetes comes with the possibility of some significant health risks. to reduce the risks you need to manage your blood sugar levels. There are a few approaches people take. The approach I took was to try to manage my levels with only diet and metformin. By testing regularly I can tell what foods my body copes with and what it doesn't.

If you are on any medication such as insulin that directly effects your blood sugar levels (rather than metformin which is not direct) then you really need to test regularly because there may be the risk of a hypo.

Most of the medial profession seem to consider t2 as a progressive illness. There are many on this site who have demonstrated that it doesn't necessarily have to be if you are willing to make the changes to your diet.

Most here find that their bodies do not tolerate carbs. Regular testing will let you know if that is the case for you. With the medication you are on you may want to reduce your carbs more slowly with very regular testing.

There are many on here with experience of medication so I will leave more advice to them

Let me end by saying welcome and you have found the best place in the world for diabetics. The people are awesome and this site gives you hope that you can manage- no thrive despite or. maybe because of the diagnosis.

Stick around and post and read- Good luck

It is rather strange that you have been told to test, but not informed that you should - that you really need, to avoid eating sugar and starch, as carbohydrates are the problem.
A low carb diet is perfectly sustainable, and delicious - I just ate beef, mushrooms and a small amount of runner beans for dinner, with a mug of coffee with cream. I know from previous testing that I might just tip over the 7 mmol/l mark, as any beans or peas seem to act above their carb , but with my Hba1c being just at the top of the normal range I am happy with that.
I started out eating hardly any carbs for a few days then worked up to 50 gm per day, as I knew I could sustain that indefinitely. I checked 2 hours after starting to eat and saw my numbers drift down to 8 as I changed beans and peas for other veges. Once at 8 I stuck to those meals and saw the numbers go down below 7 and even lower as I felt better, the weather improved and I started to do more. I have to confess to morris, maypole and longsword becoming my weekly routine. I was told to take Metformin and a statin, but I was so dreadfully ill I threw them away. Rather galling to realize I never needed them

I managed to go low carb immediately as I already know about it, so no metformin for me.
I would say that if you are going to cut carbs drastically then check with your GP/team first as your meds may needs to be lowered sooner rather than waiting for a 3mth/6mth checkup.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- this might help you figure out foods to start with, which are "safe" for T2's. And a bit about testing. There's a LOT of information out there, but this is everything I wish someone'd told me right from the get-go, so hopefully it'll be of some use.

And you might want to bin the weetabix. Eggs, bacon and cheese all the way! ;)

@Jojo240874 the advice above is great, check out that nutritional thingy link. It's the best written piece on here for anyone new to T2 and wondering what to eat etc.

I'd also agree, toss the weetbix if you want to give trying low carb a go to get things back in order! :D
