Help with breakfast: Porridge

That is a great result @JJO:)

At least now you can try other options too and play about with the bolus timing. Hope your good progress continues.

Day 5, dropped the basal this morning to 11 as had a couple of hypo feelings and one low reading which I really need to avoid in my line of work.

As a side note my morning BS was high at 9.4 this morning, I was expecting that as I realised i forgot to take my metformin and my pre bed BS was 4.4 so I had a snack. Both evidently enough to raise my fasting sugar. Not massively happy about the 9.4, but working on that!

2 hours post porridge 8.1. I'm happy with the 8.1 post breakfast for now, I know others may not be.

Thanks again

@JJO Control is a 'work in progress'. You're doing really well :)

Balancing the demands of work and diabetes isn't easy at all, and you've got off to a really good start.

Well okay, back to the drawing board on this one. Could just be having an off day... but

Data recapped again so you can all see all the info, in bold is the new bit...
There is 44g of carbs in my bowl of porridge. I do put a little bit of real butter to add a little flavour (and use full fat milk for the fat)...
Day 1: Pre porridge = 7.7mmol/L, 5u of insulin and 2hrs post is 10.8mmol/L
Day 2: Pre porridge = 7.8mmol/L, 7u of insulin and 2hrs post is 10.9mmol/L
Day 3: Pre porridge = 8.0mmol/L, 9u of insulin and 2hrs post is 8.9mmol/L
Day 4: Pre porridge = 6.6mmol/L, 5u of insulin 25 mins before and 2hrs post 7.4mmol/L
Day 5: Pre porridge = 9.4mmol/L, 5u of insulin 25 mins before and 2hrs post 8.1mmol/L
Day 6: Pre porridge = 7.3mmol/L, 5u of insulin 25mins before and 2hrs post 4.4mmol/L

So I've pulled my basal insulin down from 15u on day 4 to 13u and again on day 5 to 11u as I'm now back at work and experiencing lower BS than I'm happy with. They are only mild hypos but because of my line of work I really can't afford to have hypo's and if I can't get the hypo's under control I'll have to quit, it wouldn't be safe for the patients that I care for (work in the operating room!). Had my first serious hypo tonight, which I'm not putting down to my basal, but just perhaps a miscalculation between insulin and food....

Anyway. This is more of a rant than asking for opinions, but if anyone has any pearls of wisdom why my BS should have dropped so much 2hrs post porridge.... Nothing else changed, same walk to work, same work load, really just don't know.

Josh

@JJO, you could try omitting breakfast altogether in the morning and see which way your bg levels go, if they drop then it's likely that your basal dose needs reduced.

I would be treating waking at 7.3 and dropping to 4.4 at 2-hours post food as a success! It will rarely be 100% perfect.

Did you feel hypo at 4.4? I have no issue running my levels in the low 4s and feel fine; 4.4 is not technically a hypo. Many non-diabetics will run in that range perfectly normally.

Thanks @noblehead that's helpful, I need to learn how to test and re-test my basal levels. I also really need to sit down and read the think like a pancreas book thats currently untouched on my bedside table.

With exams looming, I'm getting massively behind on my revision work so don't have time. )-8

@pinewood Thanks for that.

It was great to see a number that low, but equally it hasn't been in keeping with the rest of my previous findings. I didn't feel hypo then and didn't treat it as as you say it's not officially a hypo. When i checked a little later I was 3.9 and the jelly babies made an appearance, had an early lunch with whole grains and slower releasing carbs and gave less insulin for it than I would normally for my lunch (3u instead of 5u).

Been battling the lower end of the scale and would rather be a bit higher for work...

Thank you for sharing @JJO. I am a parent of a newly diagnosed child and am learning a lot from you accounts.
Great work on the porridge. It is my daughter's current fav breakfast (as we decided to leave cereals since diagnosis)
Hope your return to work goes well.

You are new to insulin and could just be your body adjusting to it. I have heard it takes 6 months for that. I had all kinds of randum numbers and hypos in the first year.

So it got a little worse this morning.

8.4 pre, 3.9 after. Just eaten some raisens and a packet of crisps. I need to pack some more healthy snacks if this is going to be a regular thing! My waist line won't appreciate it!!!

It only occurred to me this morning that I changed novarapid pens as the old one ran out. Wondering if the new pen is more effective insulin?

Thanks for the ongoing discussions and support. Really appreciate it.

Wow @JJO! You're doing so well. You sound like the sort of person who must have really amazing T1 friends in real life!

Ha, stalker! Don't think I'm falling for your shenanigans.

Yes I do sir, and you're the bestest!
