Don't have diabetes
Hi everyone, my name is Emma, im 25 from Australia

i dont have diabetes but i really need help trying to figure out if i might have hypoglycemia

my whole life i have been getting dizzy, shakey, angry and heart palpitations if i don't eat for more than 5/6 hours
as soon as i eat something these symptoms disappear in 5 minutes
i have never fainted from it but i have come pretty close at work when i was unable to eat

it never effected me much but this past year i have been sick ( celiac disease, LPR, suspected rheumatoid arthritis) and it has gotten worse and been happening every 2-3 hours or straight after i exercise/walk

i have recently had my blood sugar checked twice by doctors both times they said it was normal and just to keep eating snacks anyway

but since i wasn't having symptoms of my blood sugar being low at the time of the doctor appointment i feel like that hasn't really addressed the problem.
so i would like to try testing my blood sugar at home when i feel like it is low but i have no idea im do haha
like how many times? what time of time? how long after eating?

any advice would be appreciated

thank you so much

I don't know how you can get a meter in Australia maybe your GP would give you one but to know what your BG levels are it is essential that you test .First thing in the morning before eating ,before a meal and 2hours after ,also when ever you feel shaky etc .Keep the results and show them to your GP .The symptoms that you are having many not be blood glucose related though so make sure that you get your GP to do other tests

Hi there, I would say you could get a meter and test when you feel very low. Most meters will keep a record of your tests so you can show your doctor. In the meantime my son was told to keep a small pack of peanuts in his pocket for when he went low, he is hypoglycemic, and it seems to help. Sugar will make you feel better fast but will drop you back too low just as fast. If you are hypoglycemic you should be avoiding high sugar items as they will cause the lows as a rebound effect. There is a subforum for reactive hypoglycemia here that might be of interest to you. Click on forums at the top and there will be a list of subforums, scroll through until you find it. I hope this helps and welcome to the forum. :)

Hi @emmatori6

Sorry you're not feeling 100%. No one here can diagnose you, but with your recent health problems I can understand why you're anxious. If you're not satisfied with your doctor's answer, you could ask for more tests. Thst would, hopefully, give you a deli ite answer about what wS happening - or, indeed, put your mind at rest. Some people do need to eat more regularly than others.

If you want to test your blood sugar yourself to see what's happening, you should be able to buy a meter. Make sure you choose an accurate one and get sufficient strips so that you can test enough to build a reasonable picture of what's happening.

But, as I said, do soeak to your doctor if it's concerning you and if you believe their test didn't show enough.

Hi Emma,

I have Hypoglycaemia.
We have a forum on the condition, it is called Reactive Hypoglycaemia.
Click on the forum button, scroll down and you should see it, there is lots of information there and how we control the condition.
You must buy a glucose monitor and test, if you want to find out what is going on with what you are eating. You will have to badger your doctor to get further diagnosis because I've found that GPs don't have the knowledge to bring the symptoms you have to know what is the cause of your problems.

Do have a look at our forum and ask questions.

hey thank you so much everyone! you are all very helpful

luckily i don't like sweet food at all so im not consuming alot of sugar so i usually eat bread or pasta its im feeling low

i have spoken to doctors but blood glucose is at the bottom of my list of problems if that makes sense.
been to about 14 different doctors/specialists this year , spent thousands of dollars and still not getting better so i'm at the point where im just trying to do everything i possibly can to help myself.

im pretty sure i can buy a meter just at a chemist but will have to read up on it to figure out which one

Bread and pasta turn into glucose the minute you eat them. It does not have to be sweet to mess with your blood sugar.

Hi again,

Most of your symptoms may be attributed to blood glucose or as you call them blood sugar problems. Most foods have an effect on blood sugars.
It is how much your body is intolerant to.
If you also have other hormonal problems that can increase your sugar levels as well.
If you don't get control of how you are affecting your blood sugar levels, then the symptoms will get worse.
If you were diagnosed with hypoglycaemia, then diet is the first treatment you really need. Putting that to the back of the queue is not good to your health.
You would be really surprised how much the change in reducing your carbs and sugar intake would improve your health.
Get a monitor and see how food has an important role in how your body reacts to it!
