Thanks for the adviceA good quesrtion @Craigwer .
I think it best that you ask your nurse about this.
And if you look on Home page under Type 1 diabetes: Hypoglycaemia and Ketoacidosis.
You would need to speak with doctor or nurse and maybe have a script for a medication called
'glucagon' dispensed but your Dad would need to know have to use it (prepare it and inject it).
Carrying a 'hypo kit' on you is common practice amongst T1Ds - gluco-tabs for example and
your Dad knowing what other things can help in case of a hypo - plus when and when not to
apply food to someone who appears to be lapsing into unconsciousness.
I think you asked before about carrying a medical ID bracelet so that a stranger can know that
you are diabetic and to help them know what to do!!
As @Juicyj points out above. Do NOT inject insulin if unconscious through suspected low blood sugars. You may never wake up if this happens. I don’t wish to be alarmist but I believe it’s not possible to overstate this.
I was told to not give glucose through a drink because of chokingYes, never ever inject insulin if a diabetic is unconscious. If you can provide some glucose thru drink if conscious or thru glucose tablets or similar (crushed to avoid choking)
I agree you need to take great care such as rubbing the inside of the mouth with glucose powder or a little liquid that doesn't risk choking. However if someone is unconscious thru a hypo then they are in danger of brain damage if the BS goes far too low.I was told to not give glucose through a drink because of choking
