Hi i'm new and desperate,i am asking this for my dad so i hope you do not mind me gate crashing.
My poor father has been diabetic for many years type two, this was always controlled by pills up until 2 mths ago he now has to inject since then things have gone mad he has regular readings of 30 or more,he is tired all the time, confused and having incontinence issues,he keeps saying he feels so ill and wishes to god he had not changed onto insulin. His nurse just keeps saying up the dose and keep at it,we are so worried at the damage this is doing to his body.He also lives on his own and i am so worried that he will collapse and be left lying there.
My father is a proud and independent man i can't bare to see this happening,i lost my mum 2yrs ago to Meningitis do not want to loose him too.
What can i do,is this normal for the first months any tips on getting his blood sugar down,he is on a long acting insulin he injects at night.Should we be pushing for more answers from the nurse.
Any help would be so appreciated. :)

Hi anne
I'm no expert but just want to reassure you that this is the best place you could have turned too. I am sure one of the real experts will give you much better advice than I can soon.
Hang in there
Ken

Thankyou ken,i really am desperately worried about him he is not an easy man to advise and even after all these years resents his diagnosis of this disease.
I just want him well,as he has grand children and the youngest is only 16mths.So frightened he is going to die  if we can not get this sorted.

Hi Anne and welcome

I'm not surprised at your father being tired and feeling unwell with levels of 30 I'm like that if I reach 19.

I can only assume that your father is either not on a diet or following a hi carb diet from the doctors surgery for levels like that. It might be an idea to lower his carb intake considerablyv that should get his levels down. get him to cut out bread, potatoes, pasta, rice - look at the advice in the low carb board here. It worked for me.

There may be other factors at work here if there are I'm sure someone else will point them out

Well that is probably the problem,he tries with his diet but since mum died he is not good,he has never had to cook for himself.
I did wonder if ths was the case,he has had a diet plan from the nurse but it did not suit him as he is very traditional with meal choices and will not try anything new.
He eats far to many chips from the chip shop and loves bread etc .
O dear i will have to bite the bullet and make suggestions.
Tough love he is not going to like this.
Thank You so much.

That diet is almost certainly the cause. He really needs better training in how to dose the insulins correctly, and very likely if he was on metformin and they stopped it they should start it again to bring down his insulin resistance. Exercise can help with the insulin resistance and glucose disposal but like the diet needs to be carefully balanced against the insulin.

Well i tried, showed him the posts found diet suggestions etc,but he won't have it and i know he will not do it.
What do you do when a diabetic will not help himself,i told him hoe scared i am but nothing works he thinks he know best :(
Thank You for your help,i will keep trying.
