H All,
Diagnosed type 2 in June 2009 and I am struggling.

My diet is good in March 2006 I was nearly 30 stone I have lost 13.5 stone since then and now weigh in at 16.5 stone.
I changed my diet on its head i cut out all processed food and only ate 3 times a day with no snacking. I also drank 2 litres of Ice cold water a day. Had to be ice cold as your body will burn calories warmining it up. I did not and still do not see it as a diet, as if I wanted a cake or a mars bar or a pudding I would have it but only at the time of a meal. I was a 2 packs of biscuits and 3 jugs of coffee a day man. eating a breakfast a mid morning snack, a lunch more afternoon snack a tea and a supper.
In January this year I found myself needing to drink water and a thirst that was almost unquenchable. I guess I should have been more proactive then and gone to see the Doctor then.

the harsh reality is that I have probably had diabetes for a while and left untreated have sufferred the consequence of high blood sugar levels.

my blood sugar levels were 12.1 after a fasting blood test in June and I am being treated with metaformin to help with blood sugar levels a non fasting blood test shows the level at 10.2 so the Doctor has recently doubled the Metaformin. I am on a statin and an asprin a day.

before being diagnosed with diabetes I had noticed that I was having trouble with my legs, like a pins and needles in my feet and as the day wears on I get like a 'popping candy' sensation in my toes and balls of my feet, followed by incredible urges to move stand walk around. I now understand this to be nerve damage caused by Diabetes.

I guess I am struggling with the restless legs and the poor sleep.

I have many questions but sometimes am too afraid for the answers I might get to ask them.

one burning question is: Is there a way to improve the restless legs without taking tablets ?

Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

Ian

Hi taxman.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and ask questions if you wish.

In response to your question:
Try and get good control of your Bg levels, this all helps to counteract the effects of many things including Neuropathies etc. Keep going with the weight loss too, excess baggage plays havoc with joints in the legs and feet. You seem to be doing well, probably just needs a bit of fine tweaking to get you to that goal I'm sure you have in mind.

If you get your blood glucose down to near normal [around 5] and keep it there nearly all the time, you should get a gradual improvement in the pins and needles
Yyour weight loss is magnificent. Congratulations!! 8) Do you feel much better in yourself?
To get Blood glucose under control you can use a variety of strategies, one of which should suit you.
1] Severe carbohydrate reduction
2] Medication doses to suit your diet.
3] Much less food overall
4] Low GI/Gl diet.
Somewhere in there is probably the right choice for you
Do you have a meter? It's essential if you are going to get this thing under control.

Thanks for the replies, good news about the pins and needles just the bump I need to beat the blues I am feeling at the moment.
no meter at the moment, however due to see my Dr Next week to look how I am coping.

As to loosing the weight , yeds I am more active to give you an idea of size I am 51 years old 6ft and a 1/2 inch when I was 18 I was 6ft 1 1/2 " so somewhere i have shrunk..... and a fit 14 st 6 lbs

in March 2006 I was nearly 30st I could have been heavier I had to use 2 scales to weigh myself as I could not find a scale that would weigh me. In terms of inches I was a 61" chest 56" waist and a rear end that could cause an eclipse. each of my thighs were 40" .The motivation to loose weight came as i settled down to watch TV and a programme came on about a 30 stone teenager I found my self uttering " How on earth can.... " and shut up as the realisation dawned that i had to be close to the same weight.

Grim determination and resolve I decided to cut down on all of my eating. I made up a fresh bowl of salad Letuce cucumber tomato spring onions olives feta cheese peppers oranges and apples and slices of lemon and lime and a light dressing of lemon juice and olive oil.

I made this up every 3 days and did not feel guilty when I got a munchy attack and ate the lot.

I limited my eating to breakfast lunch and tea and never missed a meal. Breakfast was porridge or cereal and Toast. I dropped my coffee intake from 3 jugs a day of filter coffee to 4 mugs a day and endured the feeling **** the lack of caffine suddenly left me. the biggest thing though was not eating buscuits. I used to eat a famaily packet of digestives a day with the coffee and custard creams or bourbons or milk chocolate digestives not to mention mars bars snickers etc etc.

over time I gradualy ate less and less and now eat only normal portions of food instead of a plate piled high and overflowing... I also allowed myself to leave food on my plate , or resisted temptation to clear the rest of the families plates of the left over food.

I do not see myself on a diet , but rather enjoying a change of eating habbits .
I realise now that I ate a lot of Pasta and rice.... so I am substituting Brown rice and wholemeal Pasta. I now see that I have to drasticaly reduce my carb intake so am going to opt for a meditaranean style diet lot of fish meat and salad.

Currently I am 48 inch chest a 38 inch waist A shrinking behind and my thighs are 28 inches and i weigh 16.5 stone I want to get down to 14 stone. However the michelin man is now looking very saggy and could easily become a skin donor!

thanks again for the input I am so happy I found this site on google I feel much better now.

hya ian,
glad to hear you found us,
keep asking the questions :D

Hi Ian,

Superb progress so far! Well done!

As usual, excellent advice already from Hana. I'm a Type 2 myself and in my opinion, cutting back on the starchy carbohydrates - i.e. cereal, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice etc is the best way to go to get control of your blood glucose levels.

Best wishes - John

That's quite remarkable, you've come a long way in such a short time. :D

I too limit my carbs to around 100g a day, somedays maybe 120g but more often it is nearer the 100 figure. Pleased things are working out for you!
