Hi all!

Just to introduce myself; my name is Sue from Berkshire. Recently been diagnosed, and registered as Type 2 on 1st of this month. Given the information and pack plus a Glucomen meter/lancets/test strips; have been testing twice a day (various times of day) and as of yesterday after the latest visit to the diabetic nurse, was assured I have lost half a stone in first two weeks and the readings are relatively good so far. :) She also checked with my doctor and no medication has been mentioned/discussed at this time.

My Dad was type 2 then became type 1 on insulin; think I've tried to take this as a 'wake up call' - Dad actually passed away from cancer nearly 15 years ago but he'd had diabetes complications also; have been missing him a lot lately though! :( Have been eating healthier and doing some exercise including finding a great Salsa dance workout on DVD which I took to like a 'duck to water', so to speak. However, have given myself a little chocolate treat once a week (one finger of a 2 finger kit kat) when I visit my Mum and she has the other half! :) Guessing and hoping this is ok to do? Think if something is TOTALLY forbidden you tend to crave it more?! :)

Trying out things I've never had before and generally feeling a fair amount better than when I was first diagnosed (was 14.9 and had a nasty bout of thrush). Think I'm right in saying there may be recipes somewhere on the forum but please could you advise where? Thanks in advance!

Sorry for 'rambling'! Greetings to all on the forum, best wishes, Sue

Hi sue
I'm in Berkshire too.(Tilehurst) Where are you?

Hi Sue.
Welcome to the forum.

As Sandy says take a good look around and ask questions. Try to pick the right area for your questions.

As for Recipe's - if you type the word in the search box top right you will get about 4-500 hits on the forum. Just take a look. Treats are allowed in moderation. If you have the willpower and your Bg numbers are low. I keep some chocolate(dark) in the fridge for weeks, then just have a small amount. :D That's a blow out.

Ken.

Hi again! Thanks everyone for your help, words and advice! :) I will be sure to check your suggestions out and 'give it a go'! Ken, thanks for the help re dark choc, that's a great idea and I'm 8) with that, cheers! :)

I'm in Berkshire too.(Tilehurst) Where are you?

Hi hanadr, I'm near Thatcham/Newbury; actually live in a village called Cold Ash which is about 2 and half miles from Thatcham. It's a great village for walking too as it's mostly either hill roads or footpaths which connect up through to other paths/lanes, right out in the country! I'm aware of Tilehurst in relation to Reading but not greatly familiar, sorry to say.

going to check out the rest of the forum and thanks again! :)

Hi Sue,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I'm a Type 2 also - I was diagnosed around nine years ago in the very early stages. Nothing much happened for the first seven years or so but changed around two years ago.

More recently, I've taken charge of my own situation and changed things for the better almost entirely through changing my diet - also, lost weight too. My last HbA1c was 5.5% - it was as high as 9.4% a couple of years ago.

My advice is to read about what other people advise and make changes to your diet - what you eat and how much you eat of certain things such as carbohydrate.

I've found myself that a great deal is possible if we treat diabetes seriously and take control of our own situation.

Best wishes - John

Hi John,

Many thanks for your kind and helpful information and guidance! :D I will certainly be taking my time to read through and take in what others say on this forum. The info from the clinic etc in a pack all at once can kind of be a bit overwhelming; :? it was at my first appointment with the diabetic nurse, like 'Oh my goodness, Whoa!'

Your personal experience of diabetes also has given me hope and inspiration, thanks for sharing! :)

best wishes, Sue
