We are what we eat and what we inherit. I'm pre-diabetic. My mother gave birth to me at 40, and she was diabetic. I'm about to turn 61. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with a diabetic attack in which I couldn't stop urinating and drinking water constantly. In the years prior, I ordered food by phone and ate junk food. The endocrinologist told me I could lose my sight, my kidneys... and I was so scared that I started eating vegetables like a pig. The following month, they couldn't believe how well I was doing. My glycated hemoglobin had dropped considerably; the nutritionist couldn't believe it!
Recently, I had a DNA test, and it showed that I have a predisposition to diabetes and gout. In addition, I have fatty liver (from drinking wine). Now I'm taking care of myself, like not wetting the bed. I'm treating myself kindly, choosing what I eat, baking my own gluten-free bread, and adapting my palate to new foods. I think the day I have to get a blood test, I'm going to have to eat a high-carb diet to get my glucose levels up, because otherwise they won't believe I'm pre-diabetic. And my health insurance won't give me the test strips for the glucometer. I know it's shocking at first when you get diagnosed, but if you accept it and start to understand where the problem is, how it works, you can solve it yourself by choosing a low-carb diet. Cheers!
