Hi.

most of us test our bloods with a blood monitor, the doctors dont recommend it but we all use them, we do a finger prick test before we eat and then one 2 hours afterwards and it gives us a clue as to if that food has effected our bloods too badly, i doubt your doc will give you one so you would have to buy one from the chemist if you fancied giving it a try, its a great way to monitor ourselves but the testing strips can be pricey

Yeah someone else said the same thing.. I am going to buy one.. ill look at prices tomorrow... and yeah ive been haveing a look see at everything.

Hi Alanamay and welcome to the forum. Have a read of the information at the link that Andy posted and I hope you will find it helpful.

You can get a monitor direct from the supplier for free usually l have the freestyle freedom lite from Abbot healthcare and the pots of sticks to use are half price from them l do not get it from chemists. Or you can get the SD Codefree off amazon even cheaper on the pots.

I would say if your dad can some off all sugar no substitute it is easier the longer you go on.If you take substitutes you still get strong cravings... and the false sugar tastes awful I was diagnosed and came off sugar in November last year and now just getting used to no sugar in my coffee. I don't drink tea. In my coffee l do not have milk l have about 3 to 4 teaspoons of single cream.

Avoid diabetic chocolates will give you the runs, oh you can get Atkins bars not cheap but are lowed carb as a treat. And also don't go low fat they put extra sugar in it. unless he has a problem stick to full fat proper things..milk/butter/cream etc but milk has a lot of carbs hence my having cream in coffee.

Lindt makes 90% chocolate that has 4g/40g of chocolate l have 2 squares at a time for an odd treat. You can also go low gi but even then you need to watch the carbs and as said starch another sugar base.

If your dad is fit but just prediabetic and no other health problems, have a read further down the home page of the Low Carb Forum full of food to eat there. Read the post Vivs modified Atkins Diet. Even if he didn't follow it there is tons of info for you there.
A carbohydrate is a term for sugar.Look for foods that say 5grm/100grm on the nutricion info ignore the sub groups as it gets confusing..

A good book is Carbs and Cals get the full size book not the pocket very easy to follow l love mine mine was off amazon.

You can buy a from Amazon called Codefree which is fairly cheap and the test strips are much cheaper

Try searching the forum for other discussions on 'low carb'. This is the route many of us follow along with testing our blood sugars to see which foods are causing the biggest spikes in our levels.

Ongoing control is a balance of exercise, weight loss and changes to diet. Keep asking questions and you will find lots of help.

You asked earlier about Daisy who is one of the moderators on this forum and usually provides a detailed summary of the information you need.

Hi Alanamay,

I feel for your dad, this must be a shock to him. You could try setting a day in the week where he is allowed a treat, that will give him something to look forward to. Other than that keeping the carbs lower as Andy suggests is best.

If you like baking there are sweet things you can make with sugar substitutes.
If your dad is gonna reach for cakes and biscuits then home baking is the lesser of the evils.

I love making Bounty balls as a treat!

There are recipes on the forum and you can choose what suits you.
