High blood glucose readings when I haven't eaten

I am a fairly newly diagnosed Type 2( Nov 2012).Since then I've been trying to get my BG under control. My problem is that my BG readings go up for no apparent reason,i.e. not eaten!I can't even get my fasting figures under 6.I certainly can't eat any type of bread, rice, pasta or potato without them going up to 10 or more no matter how little I eat.I've been testing before & after every meal for a month to try & work out why this is happening but can't seem to find the triggers, there just doesn't seem to be any pattern. I work nights & thought that was probably my problem but funny enough my BG figures seem to be better during the nights I work.Has anyone any ideas as to why this is happening & what I can do about it, I just don't know what to try next.

Hi. There could be many reasons for this. One thing is that as you work nights your body timings may be a bit confused and as the liver usually dumps glucose during the night this might be part of the problem although there are no doubt other reasons. Note that your body trickles glucose all the time and hence insulin is normally present to manage this i.e. background insulin. If the pancreas is not delivering then blood sugar will rise without any food. I'm guessing of course. Can I ask how old you are and if overweight or not?

Hi Diabell,I'm nearly 59 & I'm certainly over weight but have lost 2 stone since Nov & it's still dropping off. Another thing I have noticed is quite often my glucose levels drop when I've eaten not rise, this morning at 11 am they were 8.9 & 1 hour later after eating scrambled egg & back, had dropped to 7.1 !

Hi. Thanks for the info. I had wondered about the remote possibility of late onset T1 but it sounds highly unlikely. I can't really comment on the range of possible causes for your sugar swings; there have been other people on the forum with similar problems and you may want to ask your GP for a referral to a diabetes specialist. There is a variant of diabetes called MODY which has large swings, but I'm just guessing. All I can suggest to help with the symptoms not the cause is to spread your meals evenly thru the day, have low-GI carbs and possibly have them with some fat and/or protein to smooth absorption.

Hi Kaya659

Just a point about your bg levels reducing slightly after eating egg & bacon. As bacon & egg contain virtually No carbs this is likely to happen, as your bg level would gradually decrease without food (carbs) anyway. This is why many people like myself follow a low carb regime, as it helps to avoid big bg increases following meal times.

Tim

I have a half ***** theory that might explain some of it.

A fasting reading has the purpose of finding out how well your insulin deals with sugars provided by the liver. In the case of some of us the answer is that it does not do it very well.

If you don't eat for long periods then your liver will provide and your blood sugar is at a fasting level which could be high(ish).

Eating bacon and eggs tells your body that food is now available to process but bacon and eggs is low in carbohydrates and it stops the liver from producing. You've cheated by eating something that is not converted to much sugar so your blood sugar levels go down.

The advice given by Daibell above is exactly right and you should eat little and often etc. Read his post again.

I think the biggest factor in this is your work patterns, I'm no expert but I know when I worked shift or nights my eating habits changed drastically, even if I did try, the body has issues with mixed up timings, unless of course you switch to a nocturnal lifestyle which I doubt you'd want.

I was on the South Beach diet for a few years which I found was very good for weight loss, but in the end I came off it and ended up putting weight on and back to 24st. Just prior to being diagnosed with T2, I started looking into vitamin supplements as I suffer from Fibrmyalgia, then when diagnosed I switched to a low GL diet immediately.

Look up Dr. Patrick Holford The Low GL-Diet Bible

You may also find Vitamin D deficiency an issue with night work, I'd suggest looking up Prf. M Holick
