High blood sugar after breakfast

Right every morning I wake up at 9am and have a bowl of porridge, usually this contains 49g of carbs so I inject 5 units of nova rapid to interact! Problem being is then up until 12 ish my sugars are still on the rise sometimes pushing them to 15 16 17 sort of region. I then inject a couple more units of nova rapid which then puts me into a hypo? Any suggestions because I'm so confused??

I tend to need more extra insulin at breakfast than any other time. If I eat crackers and cheese at breakfast I need 2.70u but if I ate the same at lunch it would be 0.70u.

So I would suggest taking a little more when you inject at breakfast and see what happens. For example perhaps 1u more. This may help to avoid the high.

If you still find you are high later on(because you haven't yet found the correct amount to take with your breakfast) and want to correct then perhaps take less ( perhaps half the amount?) you usually would and see if that brings it down but avoids the low.

Hi! Once you've posted 5 times on the forum you can then private message people.

I agree with Patch that you may need a higher insulin to carb ratio in the morning.

I'm not sure what type of porridge you ate but if it's the instant variety like Ready Brek then this may be the cause of your bg spike, try if you can to opt for rough-cut oats and add some seeds to the porridge as it cooks, I use linseeds and pumpkin seeds but you could use sunflower seeds for example or whatever else you fancy. The seeds contain healthy sources of fat and help slow down the absorption of the meal, I also add a desert spoonful of natural yoghurt to mine together with a handful of blueberries.

Also, to give the insulin a chance to work before the food digests you might want to consider injecting 10-20 mins before you eat, if you do just be careful and keep some fast-acting glucose to hand, your DSN will advise you further on this hopefully.

If you still don't have any luck consider changing breakfasts, it may well be that you can't handle porridge in a morning.

Decided to change my breakfast to two poached eggs on one slice of whole meal toast, bm reading two hours later was 5.9, slightly low but a massive improvement. Plus I injected 2 extra units of nova rapid. Feeling a lot happier and a lot more with it! Cheers guys!

Hi Scotty, 5.5 is bang in the middle of the guideline ranges of 4-7.

So I would aim always to get as close to this as possible. 5.9 is 100% not to low at all. Closer we type 1's get to this and keep it this close for the first years of diagnosis the better. Excellent control when first diagnosed is the most important time.

Not something I have found diabetic teams seem to pass on to patients but all the studies back this up.

Hi Scott, have a read up on GI index of foods .i try to give my daughter a low GI food as well as I high one to counteract the spike then hypo. Low GI foods take longer to digest and release sugar slowly ,where high GI foods digest quickly causing your blood sugar to rise quickly then its digested before insulin has stopped working causing a hypo mixing them together seem to keep sugars level .weve only just started doing this and it seems to be working.just a thought x

I had exactly the same problem - always went high with porridge and also had to change my ratios as was more insulin resistant in the morning, I now eat a muffin I make in the microwave for breakfast with a slice of cheese, only takes a few minutes - 25g of ground flaxseed, 1 beaten egg and 1/2 tsp of baking powder in a mug, blast for one minute and that's it ! Not to everyone's taste but fills me up and doesn't give me a high spike and only count it as 10g of carb (using my ratios for breakfast I take 2 mmol/m of insulin to cover - always at between 5-6 before lunch (except when i've got a cold !!).
