Hi all, was looking for help and came across this forum hope someone can help..
I'm pretty recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic but it's been about a year plus and still high blood sugar anyway I've felt rubbish & thought it was low (hypo) but when I did a blood sugar reading it came up as 32.8! I've only been that high & over it once or twice but ages ago..
Anyway I'm very anxious and I took 10 of apidra but I'm only down to 30....& I took that over half an hour ago.
Any help would be appreciated so I can reduce my blood sugar it's scarey & I'm not used to any of this I feel so powerless.

Thx

Beth

When my daughter is high we up her intake of zero sugar fluid, put out coats on and go for a walk, not sure if that's the right thing to do as only diagnosed a week ago.. So don't feel quite confident to up insulin..
Hope that helps not sure it does though

No - definitely don't take any more insulin yet. If you only took it half an hour ago it'll still be working to lower your sugar. For me, a high sugar can take two hours or more to start properly dropping.

As the above poster mentioned, can you test for ketones?

Drink plenty of water, keep testing and bear in mind you may need to phone the out of hours doctor for advice.

Note: You shouldn't exercise with high sugars if you have ketones. It can be dangerous.

I'm surprised no one else has said this, but at those levels you should be going to the emergency room, and someone else should be driving you.

To put it in perspective, when I was first diagnosed I was admitted into the emergency room with a blood glucose of around 500 mg/dl (~28mmol/l). I was seen before a kid with a broken arm, and a man with a severed ear lobe.

I think emergency only when you have ketons. When its high from wrong insulin dose, take correction and see how it goes

@torq She hasn't been back on so difficult to tell her to go to a and e. Back in the day I taught a class with blood sugars of 25 correcting and drinking water. No one had ever told me to test for ketones or what they were but I didn't go to a and e. Just got the sugars down me self.
When you were first diagnosed you would have been running at those high levels for a couple of days. Saintly 1 might have just been hours?
My next step would be to phone the NHS phone line and go from there.

Hope youre feeling better soon. Not a nice feeling when hitting that high. Give it some time to come down, drink a LOT of water and test for ketones if still staying high

I understand what you're saying and for the most part I agree with you. I just feel it's best to err on the side of caution in these situations.

Beth mentioned she's been struggling to manage her levels since her diagnosis. I think that's information worth considering.

While it doesn't sound like DKA, we don't know for sure that it isn't. In the end, we're all here to help one another, but we aren't doctors. I could never forgive myself if I didn't at least offer the standard advice and treat this like it is a true emergency.

The first thing is does she have ketones? If she came back and said she had then it would be get yourself to a and e. If no ketones or low, test, correct, drink. Also phone the NHS phone line. But she hasn't replied.

Forgive yourself? None of us are medically trained that I know of so there is no competition over who will give the best advice.
You used your own experience of first diagnosis that was exceptionally dangerous and drew from it.
I would be seriously worried about having high blood sugars like that but it is not a diagnosis situation so fingers crossed she'll probably get away with it like I did without a trip to a and e.
So back to my original question did she have anyway to test for ketones?
Or should I feel guilty about asking that question before launching into giving advice when I haven't got the facts?

If your bg levels are not coming down then you should change your insulin cartridges, it may be that your insulin has spoiled or you are coming down with a cold/flu/ bug but the symptoms have yet to appear.

Do check for ketones, but if worried and your levels fail to come down then do contact your out of hours gp service or go to your local hospital, make those around you aware of your high bg levels just to be safe.

Beth, if you don't have a ketones meter, can your doctor's surgery test you for ketones asap? It's an emergency. It's better to be safe and push. You may be fine, but DKA can kill, and you need support.

Hi Beth,

I was only diagnosed over a week ago, but I was told 15mmol/l or above, you should test for ketones. Depending on those results, you either can manage at home (please have someone with you) or you need to go into A&E. If you're alone and worried, just go to A&E, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Either way, please get in touch so we know you're okay lovely.

Most BG meters are set to ask for ketones above 13.3? My DSN said anything above 13 it's a good idea to do a ketone test anyway.

From what I've been told and what I've read, my advice would be to phone your local diabetes centre for advice. Lots of fluid to flush the glucose out and keep testing to see if it comes down from your insulin. Make sure to test your ketones too. If it doesn't come down then seek medical assistance.

Hope you're ok! Stay cool.
