High blood sugar

Hi everyone,

I"m T2, currently taking one sitagliptin tablet per day for this. I haven't been well controlled with this in the last few months due to severe mental health issues and some other physical issues requiring CT scan and numerous ECG's for severe chest and stomach pain. I've been having to pee a lot more in the last couple of weeks and have noticed an unusual, unpleasant, sweet and almost fruity smell from my urine, sorry for TMI. I tested my bloods earlier and they were 16.9, the highest they've ever been. I don't have any test strips to test for ketones and I feel ok but those results have scared me. I think I may have to call DN tomorrow, don't think these tablets are doing anything and my diet isn't helping. I'm expecting a call from GP in the morning as well to discuss my many ECG results, I'll try and speak to her about it as well. Hopefully when I test later they'll have come back down.

Thanks for your reply, just checked bloods again and they've risen slightly to just over 17 but I still feel ok. I'm going to keep checking every hour and see if they come down. I've been in a lot of pain with my stomach and pelvis, don't know if that could cause this but I'll definitely mention it to the GP tomorrow. Thanks again.

Just be aware

Edited to add. Not suggesting that you have this, it's luckily rare for T2s (though not for undiagnosed T1s), but it is a medical emergency.

Thank you, that was the first thing I was concerned about when I saw those blood sugar readings. If they're still as high when I test again It'll call 111 just to be on the safe at side.

Just tested again, bloods now at 12.7, still not good but a lot better than the 17.3 earlier. Hopefully they'll go continue to come down.

Maggie
Have you been drinking plenty of water, because that can help with blood sugars.

Just an update, blood sugar at 7:30 this morning was 11.6, spoke to GP, mentioned to her about the high readings, she wasn't overly concerned but told me to keep an eye on it, radically improve my diet and call for an appt with DN.
She told me from all the ECG's I've had done they've shown I have something called an ectopic heartbeat, just basically means my heart keeps skipping a beat but it's happening to me all the time according to the ECG's. No meds required but she's referring me to a cardiologist for further discussion. She's also given me a 3 day course of antibiotics as I'd also told her about the constant peeing and sweet fruity smell.
I called to try and get an appt with DN, told no appt's at all and to call back week of 22 Dec so I'll need to just monitor this myself for now. Tested bloods again at 3pm, still at 11 which is still high I know. I've ordered ketone urine strips to check this as well because those results last night scared me. I've barely eaten anything today and drinking a lot of water.
Also just had a call to arrange my gastroscopy for 24 Dec under general anaesthetic, so guess who won't be cooking Christmas dinner this year? Unbelievable, but I need to take the appt to find out what's going on with this stomach pain and confirm if it's an ulcer. Sorry for the rambling post, what a day. Thanks again for all the advice.

nothing to apologise for.

its good that you have an appt for gastro arranged hopefully will be a short wait for your cardiologist appt. Think you said way back in october you'd been having stomach pain for several weeks had some other tests done. Won't be too much longer til they manage to get the bottom of it and your given the right treatment for you :)

Which health board are you in if don't mind me asking. I'm based near the border of nhsHighlands and nhsggc healthboards, both have a telephone number usually manned by a dsn (short hours) sometimes manage to get through to them straight away, majority of time get its case of leave a message then they call back within a day or two triage system is used. Does your team perhaps have this facility? In person appts appear to be a LOT harder to get, telephone appt maybe quicker.

best wishes.

edit: edited second last sentance forgot to type 'to get'.

Yes it's been a long wait for all these tests, I'm still waiting on the results from my CT scan as well. I'm with Lanarkshire Health Board, I asked today for a possible tel appt with the DN but couldn't get that either. My blood sugars aren't coming down and I've been super careful eating today but maybe it's just going to take a bit of time. It's just worrying. Thanks so much for your reply.

I know it’s easy to say, but try to relax a bit. Worry & stress can affect BG too, lots of things can besides what we eat, including illness, pain. You are doing all you can and yes it can take a bit of time for them to come down, and you appear to be going in the right direction so that’s a positive:)
