I've tried ringing the out of hours diabetes nurse but no answer my sugars are 23.9???? and I haven't eaten anything since 2:30pm that's over 4 hours ago what shall I do I'm stressing out??? My sugars have been so high latley aswell???

I have tested for ketones and there is none, do I correct with my meal???

I would ring the 24/7 NHS line, but I would also Take a first dose correction, till you are further advised

going by the sickday, you correct now at 20% daily dose every 2 hr and bolus for your meal when you have it, it seems to be a bonus that you haven't ketones
"If bg is over 13mmol/l and ketones are “moderate” or “large”
Calculate the total insulin (basal and bolus) in the previous 24 hours, calculate 20 per cent of that.
Bolus: take equivalent of 20 per cent of that daily total every 2 hours
Plus normal bolus ratio for anything you eat.
Maintain usual basal doses
Monitor bg and ketones 2 hourly.
Have 100ml of sugar-free liquids per hour.

When bg drops below 10mmol/l AND ketones are negative or trace:
Eat/drink 10-20g carb
Use normal bolus ratios
Use normal basal dose.
Monitor bg and ketones 2-4 hourly.":

Have you done any correction bolus?

Shelly, if your bg levels are not coming down despite correction doses then I suggest you try changing your insulin cartridges (in both pens) to see if this helps, sometimes insulin can spoil and when you get unexplained high bg levels for no apparent reason then you should always start with a new insulin cartridge.

If that doesn't work then contact an out of hours gp service, good luck.

Hey Hun,

Ok first try changing your insulin cartridge, could of gone off, always advisable to change though anyway.
Next try changing your sites - where are you injecting ?
As above, if your still running high then check for infection, like your teeth, other wise illness.
Finally are you due on ?

Don't panic and please don't stress as that will only worsen your readings, it's only temporary remember, but there will be a reason.

Good luck ;)

Checked sugars at 9 they were 15 I was happy with that so I done 23 of levimer and went to bed checked again just now and it's up to 20 again? I corrected by one unit but now I'm worried to sleep? I don't know when im due on as I'm very irregular I guess if could be that

Hi. Yes you need to adjust your insulin until things stabilise and then perhaps reduce it again. Try to get the Basal right as you are doing. Aim for something like 5 - 7 mmol when you wake up. Are you carb-counting? I assume you are in which case do increase the ratio as necessary to bring 2 hour after meal levels below 10 mmol or less. Do keep testing to avoid the obvious hypo. Yes, perhaps you have a bug etc which requires more insulin. Testing for ketones is the right thing to do. As long as that is OK and you are below 20'ish mmol then don't panic just try to adjust the insulin. Obviously keep the carbs down and have plenty of water.

spoke to hospital today and they have spilt my levimer my levels have all gone down and been between 7-12 today much better thank you all for your help

Hey, From what i've read, it sounds like you need more quick acting insulin rather than the background insulin :) if your sugars are high inject with fast acting then it should lower them quicker than using the background insulin. (thats what i do as it works for me) i guess if your levels are normal now and have spoken to doctors about it, you should be ok :)
