High blood sugars

Hi, my husband has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after being admitted to hospital with blood sugar levels of 29. We have not been given any guidance from our GP surgery other than my husband will get another blood test in July, we asked for a blood sugar monitor so we can monitor it ourselves but they said no. We bought one ourselves and tested his levels and they are 16.8 before eating anything. I'm guessing that is way to high from what I have read online. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thank you x

Welcome to the forum. Can ask how old is your husband? Did the hospital mention ketones?

A wild guess says you could help those high numbers with a change in diet.

Can you tell us what you eat in a typical day?

Hi he is 48 and the hospital didn't mention ketones, what are they?

Sometimes, if someone has very high blood glucose and they have ketones, it can point to them being T1 or LADA which is late onset. As they weren't mentioned, they are probably treating him as T2.

Could he do with losing a bit of weight? Getting the meter was a smart move. Used properly, before you eat and again 2 hours after the first bite will tell you the effect that your meal has had. Looking for a rise of no more than 2mmol. If higher the meal had too many carbs.

Hi. Yes, test just before and 2 hours after a meal if you can afford the strips. At least do 2 hours after typical meals. A reading of 16.8 is high but not dangerous but if they go into the 20s and stay there then do call the GP or 111. Do let us know whether he is overweight or in fact slim as being slim is a pointer to T1. In the meantime do keep the carbs down in the diet.

If you can get a copy of The Diabetes Code by Dr Jason Fung, also available on kindle, it is very informative.

Hey fellow-Jo,

Yeah, his blood sugars are high, but if he's a T2 that should be fixable with diet. The Fung book is absolutely excellent and you might both want to read it, as it's nice if your partner's supportive throughout this, which you certainly seem to be. But as it takes a little while to get the book and plow through it, here's a quick-start-guide I wrote a while ago: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html It's nowhere near as elaborate and in-depth as Fung, but it should help with immediate groceries and cooking.

Also, you guys rock for getting a meter. Best buy of the year!
Good luck,
Jo
