I was doing that up until quite recently mostly a whole bottle a night but I have now given up , and boy do I feel better for it , I now sleep through the night , in the morning I jump out of bed and In general just feel so much better , I think it is something that just creeps up on us and not doing us no harm , but in my opinion the sooner you give up the better , i'me not teetotal but happier to save it for special occasions .
I plan on doing that too. With maybe a bottle of red at the weekend only. I hope to be jumping out of bed soon!

Just about 2 years ago I was forced by my worsening heart condition to rethink my alcohol consumption.
I enjoyed a few beers or wine most nights but didn't consider my drinking excessive or problematic until I needed to stop.
I came to realise that no matter how much or when you drink, if you have a problem stopping, then you have a drinking problem.
I have had one or two over the last two years, the special occasion thing, but now I realise that it's the actual occasion that's special, not the drink.
If you're interested, I can post a couple of useful links to 30 day challenges that really do help.

I think I drink mainly out of habit. But you could post the links; they might be useful to me or to some other members. Thank you.

Yes it's breaking the habit that is so difficult, just like smoking or sugar.
The first one I would recommend is the Alcohol Experiment. It a free 30 day program. There is a book to accompany it if that's your thing, but it's not essential. There are daily videos and exercises to do. Things like making a list of why you drink and the perceived benifits. It encourages you to treat the 30days as an experiment, with yourself as the lab rathttps://learn.thisnakedmind.com/the...L*MTcxMzE4NjM5NC4xLjEuMTcxMzE4NjQwNi40OC4wLjA.

The second one is Jason Currill's Shrink the drink 30 day challenge.
There is a cost involved with this one but I believe it's no more than a bottle of reasonable wine.
I haven't done this one personally but I understand it is very effective

Oh my, I only just saw your post @IanBish . It sounds like you received very prompt and thorough attention thanks to you acting straight away. Very important, well done. I hope you continue to recover fully physically and mentally. It sounds like a lot to handle but you seem to be doing so with determination and some gentleness towards yourself.

Hope you're feeling better now; big shock I would imagine, and for all the complaining about the guidelines, the NHS are often just miraculous with the day to day business...
Yes, I am a little, thanks. Yes, they can be.

I did. I'm continuing to improve. We can only but deal with the challenges that come our way. Thank you.

Been away for a few days just catching up and saw your post @IanBish. Gosh it sounds really scary poor you although sounds like you got good response and treatment from NHS.
I'd imagine though it will impact on you for a while yet - a big event to come to terms with. You be kind to yourself and keep moving forward in right direction as you are.

It was, but I was in denial right up until the consultant discussed my scan results with me. It had a big impact. But I'll take things easy, and try to be kind to myself. Thank you.

Welcome to the club, glad it was obviously a TIA as it must have cleared on it's own. I've had 2 official strokes, and a third TIA which i kept quiet about, because i couldn't afford the time off work. Take care of yourself, rest and recuperate properly. I found i would have odd fatigued days afterwards, and odd very slight symptoms that reduced and disappeared over a few months. I'm sure your hand problem will go quite quickly, it just takes a short time for the brain to remap the neural pathways, and re-establish proper comm's with your hand. If you're interested here's a link for the stroke survivors forum.

I'm sure i found a different one before actually called the stroke survivor forum, but can't seem to find it now.

Thanks, @ajbod. It wasn't a TIA, but a bleed, albeit a mild one. The hand (my mouse hand) is much better now, and I'm practising saying "baby hippopotamuses", which was one of the phrases the consultant asked me to say, which I stumbled over. I feel quite tired, but I expect that to improve.

I'm sorry you had to keep yours quiet, but work have been good with me. I've handed in another fit note, so that should cover me for a couple of weeks.

And thanks for the link; I'll take a look.

I had clots every time, i always thought bleeds were the most dangerous type, but i was put right on that one, by a customer whose a stroke nurse.
I never suffered with speech problems, but my wife said i often paused half way through sentences. The fatigue clears quickly, but i found i often had the odd day over the next year. As i'm self employed, after my first stroke i always booked jobs for Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so i always had a day off after just in case.
Even now 5 years after the first one, in total darkness, i veer off to the left, unless i have something to spot. My balance is not what it was, but my strokes were Left and then right lower cerebellum, so balance was affected.

I have a telephone consultation with the stroke consultant next month. I'll ask him some questions, but if you can think of any I should ask then I'd be grateful.

Can't really think of any for you, sorry. The first consultant told me i'd suffered a cervical Artery dissection, which allows blood in between the layers of the Artery causing a back up and clotting in the Artery. The second insisted on an MRA scan, as i'd had 2 identical strokes, and they didn't have a clue what caused them. I told him about the first, and he checked my records, and said there was nothing like that in there. Only cause unknown. I assume you'll be on blood pressure med's now as a precaution. Spoiler alert mine actually have a slight lowering affect on my blood sugars.

@IanBish you probably already know this but just in case you don’t you might find it helpful to write down your questions as you think of them so that you are prepared for your conversation. I try to do that as without my list I’m liable to forget some of the questions once actually on the telephone or face to face.

I’d ask for advice on immediate “first aid” in case you experience any more symptoms in the future.
