High fat, low carb diet

Ok I can see where the "problem" is the difference between what Andy and l and many people do and yourself and other folks is we have changed our life style and food intake to a low carb high fat long term (for life) but not as a short term diet
So our food is as balanced as we can get it as opposed to a short term (10 day?) set of meals.
Long term yours would not be healthy as many short term diets are not.
The weight loss, lower cholesterol and general benefits come naturally with the foods we have chosen to eat. For us it is not a diet hence our advice is different to what you are doing.
I see.

I'm going to go call my sister. She is on this diet too. I'm going to find out if she is on any statins and warn her. Be right back.

Not saying it is wrong just that is why Andy and my advice was slightly different short term as from what you say mayo say 10 days? but long term is how you need to consider what you are going to do. As Shane said there is lot of ideas but if you go low fat then have a read of the forum

And l just looked up your statin and that is also a do NOT take grapefruit or grapefruit juice just do a google if you have lost the insert that comes with your meds on Atorvastatin and grapefruit.

The advice l heard on a programme was if you are on any meds dont take any form of grapefruit. they have found about 40 drugs it is contra indicated on but the cost of testing means they can not test all drugs.

Hello Miss Crump and welcome. I'm fascinated by this thread you've started as I'd never heard of the "New Mayo Diet" so I Googled it. The Mayo Clinic doesn't endorse or recommend it :

It is strict, but on looking at the diet plan it's quite varied, so I don't understand why you're eating the same thing each day. Also, as you're on statins I am amazed you haven't been warned about the contra indications with regard to drinking grapefruit juice!
There are plenty of people already posting their advice so I will just wish you well. I'm sure you'll have fun posting here ;)

Didn't know that one although pomelos are a sub family of the grapefruit. l guess then it is to do with the acid?. The programme l listened to didn't mention those items but they are now locked in the brain many thanks :)

It was explained to me that there is a specific enzyme involved which is found in many members of the Orange and Grapefruit family, grapefruit, and Orange juices are completely banned and I am permitted to eat a few segments of these fruit occassionaly but only if I have not taken statins for at least 12 hours. Unfortunately Grapefruit has long been my favourite fruit so its a real pain for me.

I usually don't drink grapefruit or orange juice. I was only drinking it to comply with this diet. I just called my sister and told her about the statin/grapefruit situation. Turns out she is on the same statin drug I'm on. I knew she was on Metformin. She says she will just have to find a new diet. I guess we both will.

Yes. Very true. This reminds me of that saying that medicines are double edged swords. They can help you in one way and hurt you in another way.

especially true of statins :(

lots of us low carb, and its terrific so dont give up on the idea :)

How do I fill in my information at the bottom of my post like I see you guys have on your posts? The date of Dx and medication information?

I agree with Andy just think if you hadn't asked anything here. If you want to stay low carb high fat check out the correct forum here. As l say lots of us use it as a life style. Weight loss should be gradual and balanced Vivs post is very helpful as a start point as is the carbs and cals book. I feel full the whole time have gone from 28% body fat to 19% l have lost just over half of that since late November.
I am doing exercise and my blood pressure has come down and l will see soon how my cholesterol is doing, but everyone else on LCHF says theirs has come down.
Whatever you end up eating go for a balanced food intake and do it for life, be careful doing just the same foods and if you decide you don't want to go full go low carb at least keep to lower carbs.
