High FBG, A1C on extreme low-carb diet??

Frustration...

I recently had a very bad reaction to a series of Hep B vaccine - bad polyarthritis, eye, ear problems, dizzy, etc etc. I had no insurance at the time (pre-Medicare) so I went on an elimination diet for it. In Feb of 2012, I ended up cutting out all sugar, ALL grains, most fruits and vegetables. After the third shot, (dumb, I know...) I was so sick that I even had to give up all fruit for awhile. Now I can have berries, pears, and peaches -just for breakfast. No booze at all.

I lost over 50 pounds in just 2 months.

No diabetes anywhere in my family. But I recently had my first Medicare tests, and my A1c is 6%. My FBG is 87 mg/dl.

My Dr. tells me I'm Pre-diabetic. She knows exactly what I eat; (and I had some ketones in my urine) she knows I just lost 60 pounds, yet she simply gave me a handout telling me that I had to lose weight and "cut down" on sugar.

This bit of allopathic "Wisdom" is why I'm here. :eh:

These results simply can't be accurate. I've read that Low Carb can cause high FBG. But what about the A1C?

Thanks!

It's possible that the injections had something to do with it - some meds do send your BGs up, eg steroids.

The best thing to do is treat yourself as if you are pre-diabetic, even if you're not, and carry on low-carbing. Take care with your choice of fruits some arer very high carb, but your berries will be fine, in controlled portions.

Good luck :D

Thanks.

I've read that low-carbing can skew your FBG numbers, but not the A1C. One person advised me to cut down on protein. (I do eat too much).

The Dr. seems upset with me, but I don't know what more I can do. No grains at all, no starches, only low-carb fruits-or even none. And this for 9 months now. Any fewer carbs, and I'll grow fur and start howling at the moon.

It has to be the vaccine causing it; I just pray it will wear off.

In New Zealand, there was a 60% rise in diabetes right after a Hep B vaccine campaign. There probably has been right here in the US as well, but Big Pharma carries a much bigger stick around here.

That's absolute rubbish. Your A1C is a direct result of your BG. If you can bring your BG levels down then your HbA1c will follow.

How much protein do you eat? I think that its unlikely that the protein is the primary influence on your HbA1c. Low-carbing took my HbA1c from 10.2% to 4.9% without medication.

On Paleohacks you were talking about eating " root veggies, more fruits, and a few sweet potato chips". These things aren't typical of an "extreme low-carb diet", unless you are eating them in very small portions.

What do you mean by "extreme low carb?". How many carbs do you eat?

You should really get yourself a meter to test your BG after testing.

I guess I need 3 or 4 more posts before I'm able to read PM's.

I've been waking up in the middle of the night with extreme pain in my calves - like charlie horses, which I've had maybe 3 times in my life. This has happened every night this week.

I googled it this AM, and found out that it's one of the symptoms of Diabetes "Type 1.5": The Diabetes for people for whom it is virtually impossible to get diabetes. (Unless, of course, Big Pharma gets involved. )

I have several other symptoms, too... It's the hep B vaccine again.

The good news is that there's nothing I can do about it, so it's out of my hands.

I did reply to Borofergie, but I seem to have lost the post... :eh:

The high carb meal was a 1-time thing, just to test post-prandial blood sugar. (I was going to type: "P.P.B.S." but I think that's wrong. I guess it takes awhile to get the acronyms down... )
