High Hba1c & Pregnancy Confirmed Together at 4 Weeks

My Hba1c being 9.6. My gynaecologist told me that with high blood sugar levels I can not give birth & I have to abort the child any how as it would be a baby with several defects, so I was very upset with this decision of hers.

Honestly, we want this child but if there is real risk to the child then I am ready to take the step of abortion. But willing to do anything to get everything right.

As per Sono , i have completed Seven Weeks. Today is also the first day of the second missed Period. I am taking HCG Injections power of 5000mg to carry the baby properly.

Every one in the medical community like the Gynaecologist and endocrinologist told me its a bad time to concieve.

MyGP has been supportive that if the pregnancy is viable , then we must wait before taking any instant decision about abortion.

On 6th Nov 2018, i did the second UltraSound.
The Fetal Viability is not yet confirmed. Though we are at 7 Weeks today being 11th Nov 2018.
Expected Date of Delivery will be 2nd July.

At this stage -

Hba1c is 8.5 - 26th Oct
UltraSound Shows the baby is not having a heart beat of 69/beats per minute ideally should be having 100+/bpm. The doctor who did the Ultrasound told me that this is a situation due to the Diabetes/ hba1c at the time of conception being 9.6.

My Husband is very positive that nothing will go wrong.

Sorry you are going through this but at the end of the day it is your decision as to having a termination or not There are lots of diabetic mums here some who have recently given birth so perhaps they could tell you more about pregnancy with diabetes see the pregnancy forum here

Thanks for your reply, I am awaiting more responses from mothers who have been in a similar condition.

I think for a health professional to offer you no help other than to abort your baby is really awful.

My second child was conceived when I had an hba1c of 8.4 and although I did get a telling off and told it wasn’t ideal, never did I once get told I should abort my baby or that she would have health conditions. As far as I was aware, there only concern was miscarriage.

I think knowing the health of your unborn baby is in your hands should be enough to give you the determination to get your sugars under control and have a relatively straightforward pregnancy.

I got my hba1c down to 6 and went on to have a perfectly healthy little girl at 37 weeks weighing a normal 7lb 3oz.

I do hope everything works out for you and you prove your quite frankly awful sounding team wrong! x

Can anyone help please found out I was pregnant Friday which makes me around 6-7 weeks, unexpected but just wondering if anyone else has had badly controlled diabetes before and time on conception and everything been ok and had an healthy baby I’m really worried Has it’s not been controlled. Since finding out I have really been trying to keep them on target

Get your Hba1c tested. Reduce your portion control by half. Stop junk food. Eat fruits. Enjoy your life minus smoking , alchohol & Processed Foods.

This is what we are doing. I have read on this forum in different posts that people have normal pregnancy , Just it should be managed well.

Monitoring sugar on a daily basis will be a byproduct of the pregnancy. Also Switching to Insulin or meds is the call of your Doctor or Diabetologist.

Get your UltraSound Scan done to check the Fetal Viability. Once everything is viable we can move to the next stage.

The most important thing told by my doctor “ Pregnancy is always an accident and gift of god.”

Just a note to be careful about which fruits you eat - some have very high sugar contents, especially bananas. A good visual reference guide for comparison is:

I had very bad gestational diabetes, and the nutritionist banned bananas from what I ate and told me to only eat small apples (I lived in the US at the time and the US has monster-size apples) and always with cheese or something.

For my second pregnancy, I followed the guidelines the nutritionist gave me from when I found out I was pregnant, and my sugars always measured within normal range, but I was monitored very closely by midwives, having weekly appointments past 28 weeks. At 35 weeks, one midwife said I could let up on the diet a little bit - have a glass of milk, maybe a banana. At 36 weeks, a different midwife shouted at me that I'd eaten a banana and despite everything I shouldn't forget that I still had diabetes and I was putting my baby at risk...!

So a diet of lots of bananas is not a good thing.

I'm the daughter of woman who was told not to have a baby because she was (in order of importance at that time) 1. deaf. 2. ancient (age 40...!). 3. insulin-dependent diabetic. I'm pretty thrilled she chose to ignore her doctors' advice. Particularly because I think all three points are not good reasons now, and they were probably not 41 years ago either, despite what medical professionals believed then.

It's why many folk don't announce their pregnancy to all and sundry before the first 3 months. While high hba1cs may make issues more likely, plenty of normal pregnancies just don't start out right, and so if you lose this baby you'll never know whether this is because of the hba1c or because it just wasn't meant to be.

Well as I said, mine was 8.4 at conception and my little girl is perfectly fine.

I also certainly wouldn’t say it doesn’t matter what you do during your pregnancy... you seem to have been informed of some strange things from your medical team and almost the complete opposite from what I was told during my 2 successful pregnancies.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like there is nothing you could have done to prevent this, miscarriages in the first 3 months are extremely common, for non diabetics as well as diabetics. Lots of virtual hugs.
