High morning readings because of pain in the night?

My last HbA1c was in Octobr and it was 42 and at that time my fasting morning readings were rarely over 6. A couple of months ago I started getting higher fasting readings, in the high 6's but fine by lunchtime i.e. 5.4ish . At the same time I got a shoulder impingement and was having facial neuralgia so I put it down to that. The facial neuralgia seems to have sorted itself but the shoulder impingement has be causing me a lot of pain especially at night . At one point I was waking every hour or so in pain from lying down but have been fine during the day. At this time my fasting numbers were up to 7.8 and not going down to their usual by lunchtime. I can't afford to be testing too often. In the last week or so - after physio and getting exercises my fasting numbers have being going down again every day less and yesterday were 6.2 because I was back to my usual sleep pattern of 2 hour sleep stints but then going straight back to sleep. I have decided that I wake at the end of each 90-120mins sleep cycle. Last night I woke in a lot of pain in my shoulder again at 5 a.m.and my fasting blood sugar was 7.4 and before my evening meal after a very brisk 15 mins walk it was 6.2 - but I had been naughty 3 hours before and had a small slice of cheese cake (lots of fat and protein to counteract the sugar in it!)
My question is should I really now go back to my Dr.and get put on the inevitable Metformin or wait until this shoulder impingement has stopped giving me pain and hope I go back to normal figures. Most of the time I am on a strict low carb/low GI + vigorous exercise (high intensity classes at the gym) protocol but am on holiday at the moment abroad so not doing as much exercise as usual. I am scared to go on medication because of side effects and would rather control on diet exercise and supplements. My diabetes is inherited - not due to obesity.

Well, stress can definitely send blood sugars up for T1s, so I'm guessing that this is the case for you too. Usual disclaimers about "I am not a doctor" and "consult your doctor", but personally I wouldn't be in a hurry to go on drugs in your position., particularly as it looks as though your levels are coming down...
Can you tell your doctor what you just told us? It's not at all clear to me that they'll just automatically medicate, but it might be useful to get an HbA1C to see what your sugars are doing....

So this is weird, i also have an A1C of 42, i also have a bad shoulder impingement and i have a facial neuralgia! What are the chances!
My fasting levels are around 6-6.5, the shoulder is very bad, i struggle to sleep but it hasn't raised my fasting level much so it's strange that yours has had such a jump. Stress and poor sleep can really affect fasting levels i find but its a big jump to 7.8. I would get an A1C retest and see how that pans out. There may something else going on, eg. An infection, or virus or something.
Out of interest what caused your neuralgia do you know? Mine is pretty bad and i don't know what is behind it. Specialists dont think its related to my shoulder injury.
Just a thought, have you had any steroid injections in your shoulder as that can raise blood sugar?

How strange? Firstly the pain I had was in my teeth. It came on badly for a few hours and then would subside and come on again. My dentist said there was nothing wrong with my teeth and when the tooth pain was on the upper teeth rather than the lower ones I started looking elsewhere for what it was. I decided I had a form of trigeminal neuralgia. I also think the causation was me biting my inner cheek with those teeth so have made a constant effort to stop it.
I have not had a steroid injection but have had it offered and also an operation although I was told that neither are particularly successful. The only infection I can think of would be something in the root canal of a tooth I originally wanted out but my dentist refused point blank. I hope you are getting physio for your impingement. Mine was caused m=by throwing 8kg kettle bells from one arm to another in a circuit class on top of me bruising that shoulder when I fell out of a snowmobile in the Arctic tipping it over going up a bank trying to avoid a pine tree!!
Oh well am going to bed now and haven't done my exercises today. I hope I sleep OK.

Let me explain. The HbA1c is a measure of your blood sugar over the last 3 months. This is the reading the doctor will go by so you are what is called pre diabetic. If you want to lower the 42 you can do this in a few ways. 1. If you are overweight lose the weight. 2. Go on a strict low carb low GI diet and add exercise to this. This is the way I have managed to stay off medication for about 15 years now. However because my diabetes is inherited not due to overweight it is inevitable that sooner or later despite my sterling efforts I will end up diabetic rather than prediabetic.
Hope this is understandable .
