High Readings

Hi All,

New to this forum, but have been diagnosed with type 2 for around 8 years.

I have recently been put on insulin, Humulin M3, have been using it now for around 4 weeks, upping my dose every few days, as have not lowered sugars yet.

I have been getting some ridiculously high readings over the last week, been over 20 for a few days, then got a reading of 33 this evening! Any advise on what I should be doing. I don't feel particularly bad, other than being thirsty, but realise these readings are very high.

Thanks in advance

With readings that high you should call 111. Do you have access to ketone testing?

By all means call 111 (those readings are far too high) though I suspect they'll just tell you to take more insulin. The problem with T2 is that you become increasingly insulin resistant, so if you want to keep eating carbs you tend to need more and more insulin. I would suggest reducing your carb intake as a possible long term solution, though obviously you'll need to watch for hypos...

And if there's any chance you're ill (eg a UTI) then that can increase insulin needs dramatically.

But if I lived in the UK I wouldn't want to go to hospital at the moment unless I really had to ....

Hello and welome,

I am sorry to hear about your current issues-I hope you have received some medical attention.

How have you been treating your diabetes until recently? I ask because I agree with @EllieM that the problem of being a type 2 is the insulin resistance and increasing the insulin won't help with that long term. In the short term it may be what is needed though- you will have to discuss with your medical professional.
