Hi Everyone. I take my BM before bed and take my Lantus along with my other meds. In the morning my BM is higher than the night before. Am I having little hypos without realising? I feel fine with no headache or damp sheets. Any advice would be good. Thanks.

Hi @jillsymes66 What are your night time and morning readings like ? One explanation is the morning liver dump which releases glucose, the only way to really know for sure is to wake at 2am and do a blood test, just ensure that at bedtime when you do your night time reading that you have no quick acting on board, so eat earlier on, then test at 2am and if rising then it would point to your basal dose, if it's ok at 2am but high by morning then it's the liver dump working it's magic.

Hypos as you have pointed out would leave you feeling a little worse for wear by morning so it's doesn't sound like a hypo, but again a test at 2am would confirm yes or no to this as 2am is the lowest point for your blood glucose levels during the night.

Hi Juicyj. That's a good idea I shall do that. BM before bed have been from 5.3 - 5.9 and in the morning around 6.9. Still not high I know but I'm eating Keto and have dropped my hbA1c from 8.7 to 6.2 in a few months. I just don't want to be having hypos without realising. I shall set my alarm for 2am. Thanks

I get this too. I go to bed with readings of below 7.0 and wake up with it sometimes over 8.0

I've tried not eating close to bedtime, tried eating a small amount of carbs. some protein, all kinds of things. It is always still higher in the morning. Wish I could control it.

Hi @jillsymes66 I would rule out hypos as this is really only a marginal difference from your night time readings, my rule is to ensure pm and am results are always around 0-1.5mmol/l difference out, personally I would be quite happy with this result in the morning, however with the liver dump the only solution I have is to eat something upon rising and do a bolus correction for it, there's not much else you can do. If you want to monitor when it starts rising then the libre sensor is useful to learn more.

Thanks Juicyj that gives me hope. The libre looks great but way out of my finances I'm afraid. I'll just keep having sore fingers lol

fortunately its not excessive testing to confirm or deny dawn phenomenon, a 3 am reading should suffice.....

with the rise in level you have shown though it doesn't look like a significant liver response to the fasting but likely just the increased resistance we all have created from the other morning related hormones....which I don't think be manipulated in anyway unfortunately...

Hello,

For the last two nights I have been going to bed and waking up on similar readings.

During the week I am usually up between 6 and 6.30am.

I give my split basal dose at 7am.

Today on waking (6.30am) I had a reading of 5.2. By the time I got round to giving my Lantus at 7am I was 6.9 (with libre showing it was rising). I hadn’t eaten anything. It was similar the day before too. Is that an indication my evening basal has run out? Or is there something else causing it to rise?

My breakfast ratio has always been 2:10 grams of carbs too- does my body just need more in the mornings?

CI
