Highs and Lows...

Hi everyone, I'm new to the boards. My name is Maggie, I'm 19 and I've had T1 for 8 years. Recently my blood sugars have been out of control in a way they never have before (I've always found it quite easy to control my diabetes in the past.) There's no obvious reason for it - my diet and lifestyle haven't changed and neither has my insulin, and I'm not obviously ill. Over the last few days I've had bs readings ranging from 2 - off the scale (over 33 on my meter :? ) and have detected ketones a few times too. I went to my GP this morning and they couldn't enlighten me any more, though they did take some blood tests to rule out an infection...so I'm still waiting on the results of those. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this or any advice to get myself back on the level? I take 32 units of lantus at night and 10-15 units of novorapid with each meal, and I'm also taking venlafaxine for depression. I hate how little control I have over my sugars at the moment :(

Hi Maggie and welcome to the forum :) While we're waiting for a type 1 to come on the forum and help you out, even though you're not new to diabetes, going back to basics may help you. Here is the advice put together by the forum monitors where you might find something which would help you. This may differ from what you have been doing, and been told to do in the past but this is what we believe. I apologise for repeating things that you already know :) Here is the link to that information:

Have a good read around, make use of the search engine, and ask as many questions as you like as someone will always help. Let us know what your doctor says about the test results.

Hi Maggie

As you're quite young, I wonder whether the loss of control is to do with going into adulthood.

Do you record your results each day -or every other day?

Welcome Little Fishy.
All I can suggest is asking to see a diabetes specialist nurse attached to a hospital diabetes clinic, so you can discuss things in detail. If you don't attend one, then ask your GP to be referred.

Maggie,

As I am sure you are aware, insulin doses are not fixed and do need a tweak from time to time to keep our bg stable, I dose adjust for my meals and so vary my novorapid insulin from day to day, however sometimes it is necessary to also adjust your basal insulin too when experiencing unexplained highs and lows as this can often be the problem. Ring your diabetes clinic and ask to be seen by your DSN/Consultant to discuss your control, not sure if you already carb count but if not then ask to be enrolled onto a carb counting course such as DAFNE.
