Me ? two very fast walks around a lake twice a day, about 1/2 mile around, with the dog trying to keep up, I have a Reebok treadmill at home and do 20 minutes each evening, I go to a private gym and do cardiovascular workouts also weights and then have a **** good swim there,
will that do for a very active 75 year old

My God Celast that will do very nicely for anyone.

In comparison, I'm (almost) at the other end of the spectrum

1 hour of Zumba per week (Most weeks)
Walking - varies from 0 hrs - 3 hrs per week, as and when I can a) fit it in b) be bothered.

Bad girl I know

excellent celast, keep it up!!! .
Running machine: walk for 30mins at 3.8 MPH, after 4mins I increase my speed to 9mph and run for 1 minute, then I reduce it back down to 3.8mph and walk for another 4mins, then I increase it again to 9mph and run for 1 minute, again, I reduce my speed to 3.8mph and walk for another 4 mins. When I get to 14mins, increase my speed to 9.5mph, again run for 1 minute and reduce it again. After 19mins I increase it to 10mph and run for 1 minute, then back down to walking speed until 24mins then my speed increases to 10.5mph for 1minute, back down to walking speed until the 29th minute where I increase it to 11mph for the last minute. After the running machine I use the spin bike, set the ressitinance at pretty high. I do a 30sec sprint as fast as I can, get off do a 12 rep bench press, back on the spin bike for another 30 sec sprint, back to the bench press, and finally another 30 sec sprint and another 12 rep bench press. I then finish up doing a variety of weight machines. I do this on a Monday Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. On Tuesday I do 10 lengths of the swiming pool and relax in the jacuzi for 15 mins. Friday and Sundays I dont do anything. I would love to hear other peoples training programmes.
Obvisouly everyone is different, and can increase or decrease the speeds, times etc to what suits their ability.
I just copied and pasted that from another thread I posted on :D

Hi Celast,

Keep up the good work, that sounds like a terrific excercise program you have got going..

I am 43 and I try and walk (fast pace) with my hubby at least 6 days a week for 30 - 45min if possible. I also play indoor soccer once a week and occasionally fill in for my daughters netball team.

Warm regards

Sandra

That sounds very good indeed, celast, well done!

I'm trying to recover from a long term illness/sick period, so I am probably relatively active just now.

I walk for 1-3 hrs a day depending on the time I have. The 3 hour walk is on saturdays when I have time for a 'half-day trip' in the forest.

Then I do weight lifting 3 times a week, swim once a week, and have some handweights, a balance board and resistance bands at home that I use. I sometimes jog or run a bit when I can't help it, but I'm still a bit heavy for that to work too well. I cycle to and fro stuff also, try to get in a bit of exercise that way even if I don't want to be all hot and flushed when I arrive.

I need to get some more muscle into my left leg, my balance can be off still a bit and I need to lose weight and also I'm just so darned happy I can move, so I can't help it.

Average about 2 hrs a day exercise, I'd say.

Fast walking once or twice a day for about 35 - 40 minutes at a go.

I suppose the big debate is speed or distance and I'm reminded of a horizon programme that was on recently where the guy trained for a few minutes absolutely flat out because this has been shown to be better than long runs ... don't know how much relevance it has to me right enough but I do tend to favour intensity over duration (where possible)

I have never exercised in my life. I have had jobs where I'm on my feet so didn't see the point. I've just had a hip replacement so I will start using my cross trainer (when I feel ready) so I can try to lose the weight I gained due to immobility.

I swim 5 times a week for just over an hour (100 x 25 metre laps).

I have a special watch that counts laps, strokes per lap and kcalories used.

On swimming days, I burn about 850 kcals. That burns breakfast and lunch in one go.

Your correct SouthernGeneral, and the high intensity training is also better for lowering BS levels

That's a great amount of exercise Celast.

I exercise 45 minutes to an hour after I eat. In the mornings I walk, unless I am working and then I do 35 minutes of Zumba. This morning I walked 3.75 miles.

After lunch I go for another walk or if the weather is bad, then I use the Wii. Today I did 30 minutes of intensive step.

In the evenings I use the Wii and either do Zumba or intensive step followed by using a walking programme.

I have a Fitbit which logs all my activities. My target is 15,000 steps a day, though I usually get over 20,000. I've done 1246 steps so far today and used 1150 calories.
