How far is LADA genetic?

My mum and at least three of her siblings had late onset autoimmune diabetes. Back then they were told it was ‘type one and a half’. I have now been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and even after substantial weight loss (bmi now 26) and five months of a low carb diet, my fasting blood glucose is around 7. My latest HbA1c was 41. I’m wondering whether I should push my GP for a test for GAD antibodies and c-peptides on the basis of family history. Does anyone know whether there is a genetic component to LADA?

Welcome @geekesse
I think it's fairly well-known that having family members with any form of diabetes means that your chances of developing diabetes will be higher.
I doubt that your GP will be willing to fund the tests you want on the strength of a HbA1c of 41. But who knows, there is no harm in asking, they might say yes.

I’m interested in how genetic LADA is too! In my consultant appt last week I was told that I’m LADA. last year the other consultant, one i should’ve seen last week, said I was ‘slow onset type 1’. But my late father was age onset type 1 diabetes, back in the early 1960s, and this consultant last week said that was interesting and most likely my father was also LADA, so running in the family she said. He was the only diabetic in his family ; he was in the army so likely more stress related, we always thought ??
But I’d be keen to know how genetic it actually is as I have 2 delicate older children ; 1 with severe learning disability and other has chronic illnesses with autism.

Theres been some other research etc too.

lada is subtype of t1. lada appears to be just slower onset of t1 from my limited understanding. theres some things which can extend period for a limited time depending on a few factors perhaps worth discussing with your consultant to see.

i see you've got type diabetes listed as type2 should perhaps change this in your account settings, alongside if any changes to treatment type

Yes there is a genetic components to LADA/ T1 . Having a genetic susceptibility does not mean you will have T1, in your case it did, but generally it just increases your risk. Several genes have been identified as influencing a gene response, they are the HLA DQ8 and DQ2 and HLA-DR3/4/5 alleles. Also having a first degree relative with Type 1 further increases risk , father, mother or sibling. Having another autoimmune disorder increases risk. All these factors increase risk, but not inevitability.
For instance, having a genetic propensity only, the risk factor is low, but having a first degree relative with T1 increases your risk of developing T1 by 20x . Having another autoimmune disorder adds further to the risk.

In point, I have all those risk factors, the genetics, the first degree relative and an autoimmune disorder. I am also producing low levels of one of the autoantibodies associated with T1, again that’s another risk. I have not , at this time, developed T1, I do have a life time risk of developing it, but it is not an inevitability.

Edit - I’ll dig out some info for you on risk
