How many of us have some memory loss?

Seen a fair few postings where people have mentioned 'memory loss'.

As a diabetic (type 1, 25 years and now using a pump) how many of us think we have some memory loss compared to non diabetics?

Myself, I have had poor short term memory for 8+ years now, and it does really bug me that I have to write everything down all the time.

I would just be interested to know how many others think they have short term memory loss, and what type of diabetes they have, and how long.

I know there will be the normal wit, of 'I can't remember!!!!', and I 'm not doing a study of it, just interested to know how us diabetics fare with this subject.....
 
My memory is excellent - I am type 2. My husband's memory is less good and he doesn't have diabetes.
 
There's nothing wrong with my memory, but the retrieval system sometimes lets me down - it's in there, but sometimes I can't get at it! only to have it appear later.

I'm much better at remembering things that interest me than things that don't.

This has been going on for a number of years; I was diagnosed Type 2 twelve months ago. I don't associate the problem, if that's what it is, with diabetes.

Statins can cause memory loss, particularly simvastatin. Google 'spacedoc.net', or "statins memory loss".

My Dad had memory loss whilst on Statins (he's not a diabetic). When he stopped taking them his memory improved a lot (as did a lot of other side effects). My daughter seems to have difficulty retrieving memory at times which makes learning difficult, but not sure if that's related to her diabetes. I, who don't have any form of diabetes and am not on any medication of any type, have a very poor memory compared to my pre-children days. I put it down to not working in such a demanding workplace resulting in me using my memory less so it's now less effective. I used to remember the schedule of three diaries for the week ahead, what time each meeting was taking place, who was attending, where it was etc. Now I'm lucky if I can remember what I'm doing today let alone for the rest of the week and for anyone other than myself. I have to write everything down and have reminders sent to my mobile otherwise I forget. With this all in mind I think it would be very difficult to pin down diabetes as a cause of memory loss, although it is possible. But many things can affect our memory.
 
Interesting.

I have noticed, that particulary after having children, my mental function has really gone down hill. Now, this could be "mummy brain" but i actually think it is " Mummy had many serious hypos whilst pregnant and killed off some braincells brain".

I used to be really bright (could never spell though! ) but I am far from that now. I feel quite strongly that this was caused by several hypos, (unconscious, paramaedic type hypos)
 
My short term memory is definitely worse, I am not convinced this is because of diabetes though am wondering about the atorvastatin 20mg that I take daily.
Am planning to come off that for a few months after some discussion with my DN at my next review. I have a suspicion that I have got used to a number of subtle side effects since I have been on it and hope that some of these will lift when I stop taking them.
Will let you know over coming months.
 
My long term memory is excellent but short term isnt , I often have trouble remembering what I did or where we went just days ago , I think it might be the statin .
 
I have been on statins for years (pravastatin) but as I said before, I have no memory problems.
 
I have no problem with memory loss.........other than a 'selective' one some times....... :wink:

I also take a Statin with no problem at all. I think the secret is always keep your brain active.

Boy, does this place and my other interests keep mine going at a pace !

I defo have DD my short term memory is persistant every day .I get mail open it than put it somewere and thats it . If i ever do find somewaere i hav got loads of stuff missing :lol: :lol:
I try to laugh about it. :lol: :lol: :lol:
But it can be quite annoying .
 
No I can't say that I have noticed although my wife may beg to differ!

Was concentration too, but i forgot important things too,
a bit embarrassing at times, but no i haven't forgotten things forever if that makes sense

Not too sure if I have suffered memory loss but I have just read that after a two week holiday the average persons IQ drops by 20 :shock:

But as Ive not had a decent holiday for years I reckon I must have the intellect of Stephen Hawking

Maybe it's a transient blood sugar going up. The brain suffers all kinds of neurological changes with too much or too little sugar.

I experienced memory loss on statins. I would walk into the kitchen and forget why. I would have a thought that I knew was important then within a second forgot exactly what it was....

I'm pretty sure it was the simvastatin as instances of such things have markedly decreased since I've stopped taking them. Apparently cholesterol is used between neurons in brain (in the synapse), so there is some logic behind reduced functioning with reduced cholesterol.

Wonder what my doctors will do about it? They seem very tight fisted. I'm sure it kills them to put patients on more costly meds rather than the dirt cheap generic simvastatin.
 
I was put (needlessly) on statins for 10 years, and during that time I had horrendous short term memory loss. I still have bad memory despite having come off statins 15 months ago. Can remember long term things as clear as anything, but short term, is absolutely dreadful. Wonder how much of it may have been related to previous hypo's....in which case I have to accept that I am always going to be like it.....
