It was not long after the end of the war so I suppose meat was scarce and expensive
It was the same here, it was some of the only "meat" that was freely available after the second world war till meat rationing ended.

Nowadays, it seems that many are becoming more and more focused on eating a plant-based diet and leaving out animal products. But indulging in a daily burger or steak can’t be that bad for you, right? Especially since those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet can be at risk for missing out on these nutrients. Unfortunately for meat lovers, a new study has found a link between how much meat a person eats and an increased risk of premature death.

According to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who ate more red meat, processed meat, or simply got more animal protein than plant-based protein in their diet had a higher chance of dying from a chronic disease. The new research looked at data from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, an ongoing study that’s tracking risk factors for cardiovascular disease among middle-aged men from eastern Finland—a population that ranks among the highest rates of heart disease in Europe. The study population was made up of 2,641 Finnish men who were between the ages of 42 and 60 when the study began between 1984 and 1989.

Researchers followed up with the men after 20 years—1,225 of them had died. Those who ate seven ounces or more of red or processed meat daily—or got the majority of their protein from meat—had a 23 percent higher risk of premature death, reports ScienceDaily. However, not all animal protein was linked to the mortality risk: men who got their protein via eggs, fish, or dairy avoided the risk; of course, men who ate more plant protein than meat tended to outlive meat eaters. This isn’t the first strike against red or processed meat: Red or processed meat can increase your chances of getting this disease, too.

While this study can only reveal a link between meat consumption and early death, most research is pretty clear that eating more plant protein and cutting back on red and processed meat will be easier on your heart and your waistline. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends limiting yourself to no more than three servings (3 oz/serving) of red meat per week. You might want to try getting your protein from these healthy plant-based foods instead.

Could you show for each study the hazard ratio's. Without even referencing these studies I would be confident enough to say all would be less than 2, the accepted standard (smoking to lung cancer by contrast over 20). No matter how much that data is tortured a "real" link cannot be found. When persons with a bias towards plant based diets reviews studies that most would accept and well setup e.g. omnivores who purchase and eat wholefoods, compared to Vegans - the result is similar for health outcomes (Mark Hymann). When metabolic health status's are taken of indigenous populations with a meat / fish based diet primarily, the results again are predictable. When persons on this site eat either meat / fish based Keto, they tend to report better numbers across the board, with weight loss, additional energy etc. Eating meat is not a human experiment, it has been practiced before records were taken - the risks is either meat / fish being curtailed due to false reporting gaining traction, grain feeding meat (I do not want back door soy).

I know if I were in any of the studies referenced, someone would he able to twist the fact that when I got diabetes I was a meat eater - how would they then explain non-diabetic numbers for over 3 years with increased meat / fish saturated fat?

As these studies are full of scientific jargon, I felt I wanted a better understanding of the statistics cited and their context, in the results section of the new study, that says:

“Higher intakes of total protein and animal protein had borderline statistically significant associations with increased mortality risk: “

It’s the word ‘borderline’ that stands out for me - and it’s the word that the journalist who subsequently wrote up an article for a publication with a ‘scientific’ theme appeared to conveniently miss out (as far as I could see).

Having looked a bit further, I found this information useful for understanding what those statistical figures actually represent - and why they only have borderline significance (ie how tiny that so called significance really is!) For simplicity, it seems it comes down to whether there are any zeros after the decimal point, and how many of them, where the ‘p-value’ (probability value) is discussed :

Statistically I've been told that if you have your head in the oven and your feet in the freezer over all you would be quite comfortable.

And I believe that it can be shown that people who celebrate more birthdays live longer.

Oh and don't forget.

Love is never having to say you're sorry. Statistics is never having to say you're certain.

everywhere I have gone this week I have heard people discussing the 'dreadful animal farts killing this planet' and 'we all need to eat plants and not animals so we dont get cancer'. This misinformation is now mainstream : (

My suggestion that we could keep the ruminants, and stop having humans didnt go down well ; )))

My grandson keeps getting harangued by the members of his university's vegan society about his awful meat eating habit. He laughs in their faces he knows his nutrition and what he needs to build muscle. But they just can't leave him be.

Someone I respect told me a vegan joke from his son, which is very simple but always raises a smile when I think of it:

Why did the vegan cross the road?

Answer: to tell you he’s a vegan! :0)

We should consider devolving ... and wait for the outcome
