How to get into Ketosis?

Excellent post BF. I would like to add that ketoacidosis is a problem with anyone taking insulin, weather they are T1 or T2.

Yes. What wiflib said. She's my ketosis hero, because she regularly gets proper purple, while mine is a pathetic mauve colour (not that we actually show each other our damp sticks, you understand).

Insulin acts as a natural break on ketosis and stops the system running out of control into ketoacidosis. Anyone that doesn't produce enough of their own insulin (whether T1 or T2 with a very broken pancreas) is at risk of ketoacidosis if they miscaluate their insulin requirement for whatever reason. (Insulin controlled diabetes isn't really my thing, so hopefully someone more knowledgable can comment further).

When I tried Atkins the first time round, pre-diabetes, after about 4 months without a single flicker of anything remotely resembling purple on my Ketostix, I finally discovered that I was testing my urine at the wrong time  . Now I can't for the life of me remember when the right time for me was - I think it was late afternoon. :D

Dr Atkins does say that some people never show ketones. I think that for me I only show ketones when I've dealt with the carbs in whatever meal I've had. I don't show any if I go over 30g carb per day.

Make sure your tub is still fresh, too. I think the 'use by' date only refers to first opening. They seem to go stale quite quickly once you've opened the tub, if you only use them once a week or so.

Yes, just because you don't show them, doesn't mean that you aren't in ketosis. What we are really interested in is ketones in your blood, the ones in your urine are an unreliable proxy for that.

You can easily dilute them out, by drinking them too much, and men are supposed to show lower levels than women (that's my excuse anyway). They vary throughout the day, and from person to person, and they are supposed to be highest at around midnight. Certainly I have none in the morning, and usually a nice purple before I go to bed at night (15-40 mg/dl).

I know I am well set into Ketosis, I have (usually) less than 20g of carbs a day, (maximum carbs 30g a day) yet after testing today, show as barely a trace. I am not concerned though, as I have been drinking gallons of no added sugar squash.

My ketone's according to my stick are now one from deep purple. I know I am well into ketosis and also by my weight loss. I'm not sure how much I have lost, but would hazard a guess at around a stone in six weeks.

I would say more than that.

You could be right, clothes are certainly getting baggy
