Hi everyone

I wondered if you could help me about my hubbys hflc diet. When he first started this diet he lost 7lbs in one week but even though he's stuck to it religiously he hasn't lost anymore.

He's eaten so carbs at all that we can think of . In the mornings he normally eats scrambled eggs , made just with butter . He eats a lot of chicken , loads of Total youghurt. For dinner it's meat and veg , lots of steak burgers and cheese and eggs . He drinks a lot of diet lemonade . No sweets or crisps.

Where do you think we are going wrong . He's obviously really disheartened and I don't now what to suggest ?

Thanks

there is still a calorie intake to think about and levels of activity.....

what is a daily calorie intake do you think?

Total yoghurt contains carbs (check on the label) so depending on the "loads" he has he could be having more carbs than you think. Also the artificial sweeteners in diet drinks can have a bad effect on both blood sugars and weight loss depending on how your body reacts to them. Better to get some sparkling water and put a couple of lemon slices in it. Another point to check is the veg that he is having.. what kind of veg?

He eats a lot of total yogurt but we alway try to stay in 20g of carbs . Veg is greens spouts broccoli loads of cabbage . He eats mountains of cheese. He's got the hunp now and I just caught him eating a chocolate biscuit ! The lol on my face was as if he had stolen a small child lol I need to help him because I think we are doing the right thing as he feels better but we need to tweak it somehow. He's also eating plums and gravy, could it be the gravey cheese and diet drinks ?

Also what do you think of the harcombe diet ? They have a Facebook page and everyone seems to be loosing loads of weight ?

If he is eating 'loads' of cheese, that could be it, cheese has no carbs but is full of fat, eating a LCHF diet does say not to
eat too much cheese though because of the calorie content, might be worth looking at portion control too. Hope this helps and he gets back on track, well done in supporting him xx

Yeah I think maybe yoonkich cheese, I'll cut down the yoghurt as well . What's the best thing to replace it with ? He's so sick of meat :(

Could be lots of things, I am afraid, including portion sizes. :(

The plums and the gravy, the yoghurt, the artificial sweeteners, too much protein, too little activity...

People often lose a significant amount of weight the first week or two, but then it slows down or stalls - often because the first weight loss was fluid, rather than fat. Carbs can often cause water retention.

And then there is the sheer calories.
Calories tend not to matter when you are very very low carbing, but the tipping point is different for different people. So it may well be that the plums, gravy, etc are taking him above the tipping point to where calories DO matter. Hope that makes sense.

Lots of us on here find that Low Carb doesn't automaticially mean weight loss, and we sometimes have to combine it with low cal, or lower cal too. Or intermittent fasting. Or something like that.

Give your husband a hug from me? I know exactly how demoralising it gets to see the weight not shifting, despite your every effort!

As posted above - it could well be the cheese - I ran out of my late night nibble (red Leicester) and lost 2 pounds in a week. Cut the cheese down to 1 or 2 slices a day - you may be surprised at the results. Gravy can be quite high in carbs - surprisingly enough.

Also portion size is important - that together with exercise (or lack thereof?) Fingers crossed for you both.

Hi @Dawny47, I would say the answer is in some of your questions:

"lot of chicken" , "loads of Total yoghurt", "lots of steak burgers and cheese and eggs", "a lot of diet lemonade"

In the first instance it looks like your hubby is looking for fillers. I would suggest with each meal he drinks water with it and eats a little slower, he may not be giving his body enough time to send the I am full signal. For my fillers I have an overload of roasted leeks, asparagus, raddish (yes I bake these, don't knock it until you try it) and uncooked spinach - this works wonders for me. Half a romaine lettuce also surprisingly fills the stomach as does a red bell pepper

Too much protein can trigger gluconeogenesis, effectively more sugar, so possibly replacing some of this with the goodies above may help.

Perhaps add some avocado if he is still hungry. The healthy fat and fiber are very filling

Lchf is NOT high protein. Protein should be kept moderate. The idea is to replace the carb calories with fat calories. Portion sizes do matter. It's also not to gob fat on everything. Just normal portions of healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, butter, nuts etc.

Excess protein and dairy will not only stall my weight loss but will add to my weight.

Unfortunately you can sometimes get the impression that you can eat as much as you want when Low Carbing, but for many including me that is not the case.

My "headline" weight has been quite stable for over a year now, despite LC and also some intermittent fasting mainly because I eat too much Cheese and protein. When I don't I loose a few pounds, but as I am at a weight I feel appropriate for my height and age I am happy to stay stable.

When I was losing weight rapidly on the LC diet I was eating far less, small amounts of protein and salads or green veggies.
