I have been diabetic roughly 15 years and I feel that I really don't know a great deal about it, perhaps due to denial of it until 2010, I've read a few threads that mention hyper symptoms, is it something most diabetics have, I get no symptoms. Also regarding blood tests for the hbac1 it seems like they are tested for lots of other things is that normal? I only ever get told the result of the hbac1?

Personally I think you can get used to very high levels and not feel anything.
I know how much better I felt when I was officially diagnosed and started insulin but I hadn't really realised how lethargic and lack lustre I had become.
I don't notice my glucose rising now unless it goes above about 12mmol/l, then I feel a bit 'fuzzy' It's rare though and I don't let it stay that high so I don't get used to it .I'll exercise or less often inject more insulin to lower it

You should at least have yearly blood tests for cholesterol and kidney function (and a urine test for protein ). You may have others (full blood count, liver function, thyroid) You should ask about them and get a copy of the results.

Hi. I think many only feel the hyper symptoms when first diagnosed and the glucose levels may be extremely high; I went through this. You should have blood and urine tests at least once a year. The blood tests include Hba1c and fasting, of which the latter is largely irrelevant. There is also normally a cholesterol level check and the urine test checks kidney function. As Phoenix says, you should be told about these or ask if not. Interesting, by the way, that although most people say they felt tired before diagnosis or if glucose levels are high I have never noticed any change in tiredness.

I get hyper symptoms now but never use to when my bg was erratic and was mainly running higher than normal, with me I get a slight headache and start to feel tired which eases-up when levels return to normal.
