I have successfully controlled my type 2 diabetes with diet only over the last year. My die eyes is in remission with readings of those of a none diabetic. However I have had a few hypos where my bs has dropped (quite quickly) to 2.6. This is having eaten normally and without any exercise. Anyone any thoughts??

Very well done for getting things under control.
We aren't qualified to give medical advice on this forum, but I certainly think you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Hypos are much rarer with T2 than T1, but they are just as dangerous. If you get warning of a hypo then don't wait, get some glucose straight away. The worry is that you will have a hypo in your sleep. Get some professional advice and stay safe.

Very unusual for a diet controlled diabetic to have hypos. Have they tested you for type one? Or other types?

People with type 1 are at risk of hypo due to too much injected insulin.
Hypo through treatment from diet alone is very unlikely to be a symptom of type 1 but it could be something else and worth speaking to a doctor.

I am not strictly speaking T2 but drug induced but have had similar happen to me have been as low as 2.2 in the past I would if I where you talk to your doctor or DN though I got little out of my doctor when I did. Now I just try and be aware of the possible onset of a hypo and take corrective action. I test at bed time for instance and if I think I'm on the low side have a few grams of carbohydrate to stop going low overnight.

What do your hypos feel like?
When do you get them?
What have you eaten and done in the 12 hrs before?

That is very unsual. I’m no endocrinologist but my rudimentary knowledge is making me think perhaps you have some kind of glucagon deficiency or major issue with your liver. In the absence of exogenous insulin or oral hypoglycaemics, gluconeogenesis should be occurring and preventing hypoglycaemia, even if your body has to deconstruct protein or fat in order to do so.

In my opinion you should seek medical advice immediately.

A brief bit of research is pointing the finger at alpha cell dysfunction as a cause of glucagon deficiency. Obviously I’m not diagnosing you but for sure this seems like a potentially serious pancreatic issue. Definitely seek medical advice as a matter of urgency.

I had one just after Christmas went straight to Gp he could not explain why it happened. Blood tests came back ok. The one I had today I’d had lunch at 1240 finished work just before 5. Was on tram home when I felt unwell. Tom bs one stop before mine it was 3.3 and when I got off the tram to go to the car some 10 mins later it was 2.6. Because I was on my own and felt by that stage quite unwell I called 999. Drank lucozade while waiting for ambulance. BS came back up and after 30 mins on ambulance I was ok to drive the short distance home. I’m at a loss?

Nothing out of the ordinary had decent lunch lentil soup and 2 slices toast at 12.40 . I’m an office worker so don’t do loads walking. Was not late from work. On train at 4.55.

Thanks. I’ve already been to Gp he does not know why it happened and blood tests came back ok. I had another one tonight so will be going back to Gp tomorrow (the Gp I see is the diabetic specialist)

People who think they know everything.
I had a couple of hypos pre-diagnosis and, therefore, before any medication. Both were when I was on a 1000 cal/day diet consisting of a lot of fruit and brown carbs and not much else. Both were during exercise - one while swimming and the other was during a long country walk and on both days I'd already done some weights and cardio in the morning. I think I just over did the exercise for the amount of calories I was taking in.

Ive also had two hypos while on Metformin - basically for the same reason.

I think you should ask your doctor to refer you to an endocrinologist. I’m surprised he/she has not done this already. My very basic understanding of the endocrine mechanism behind this is that either your pancreatic alpha cells are not producing glucagon in response to falling blood glucose, or your liver is not responding to the glucagon. Potentially very dangerous and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Had you consumed alcohol? Only time it’s happened to me I had a low reading in the 4s the it dropped to 2.7 after I’d been drinking. Just s though
