Nothing out of the ordinary had decent lunch lentil soup and 2 slices toast at 12.40 . I’m an office worker so don’t do loads walking. Was not late from work. On train at 4.55.
That's a very carby lunch, and the soup would up your bloodsugars fast... You might want to get tested for Reactive Hypoglycemia; could be you get a belated, too big insulin response that makes you hypo.

From what I understand you can treat it by lowering carbs, because then there's not the huge amount of insulin that pops up to process them. but it IS something to look into. And remember, RH isn't very common so your doc might not have heard of it. See a specialist if you can get the referral.

I know little about it so could be completely off the mark but have you considered or researched reactive hypoglycaemia as you had quite a carby lunch on this occasion (albeit a few hours earlier).

You may find that if you advoid the bread you would do better. Bread can result in your BG increasing quickly, then your body may make too much inslin so your BG drops too much.

Personally if it was me I would.
  • Get a freestyle libre for a few weeks
  • Take a photo of everthing you eat/drink
  • Try different foods including going completely carb free for a few days
  • See if you can see any patterns
But we alleady know that bread is always a very bad option for anyone with Type2 as it is very high GI and hence increases BG and hence inslin fast. So the first think to try is a few days without bread.

I am expecting (but don't know) that mild Reactive Hypoglycemia is the issue. If a GP puts it on your medical records you will have to tell DVLA and your insurance company etc. If you can solve it yourself by changing to a diet that makes you feel better, then you don't get these issues with driving. Also your GP is likely to be more helpful if you collect data before deciding to see he/she.

Until you know what is going on, it would be sensible to test your BG before driving and keep to the rules for anyone taking inslin.

If you use your glucometer to see what happens after you have eaten, you can easily see if you are going hypo.
I would start a food diary, record your pre meal reading, your hour reading and two hours reading, then again at three and four hours, if you hypo, treat it asap.
If you find you are, I would definitely return to your GP and ask for a referral to a specialist endocrinologist who has experience with hypoglycaemic conditions.

I would also recommend reading the RH forum and seeing if anything is similar.

Are you on any meds at all?
What symptoms are you getting?

My fasting levels are always in normal range.
My Hba1c is always in normal range.
I only go hypo when I have food!
But it only happens if I have carbs or sugars!

Best wishes.

Thanks. I test my bs regularly through the day. I don’t normally eat bread but had some as my bs drops too much. I also wanted to show my GP that eating extra carbs does not stop bs dropping. Had another hypo today where bs was 5.4 then dropped to 3.3 within 2 hours. It would have dropped further if I’d not intervened. I normally eat no white bread, potatoes, pasta or rice. My bs is now in the normal range. But it keeps dropping for no reason.

Hi again,

When do you test?
as it is important to how you approach discovering what is happening.
You did right to treat the hypo, and what triggered the hypo?
Did you get a rebound spike after the hypo?

Something is causing the low blood sugar levels, but only tests can give you the answers, that is why you need the food diary.

With my type of hypoglycaemia, only going very low carb will stop the hypos!

Best wishes
