Hypos

Type of diabetes

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just over a month ago. I have already had 14 hypos most of them being within the past 2 weeks. I haven't changed anything. Aren't stressed nothing like that. Is this normal?

bless you hun:) - it is tough at first to take it all in
are you in constant contact with your DSN at hospital ?
they will have set you up with some doses of insulin that are meant to keep you level and stable but Diabetes doesn't always behave.
as you are newly diagnosed you should definitely be on the phone nonstop to your care team

for this weekend perhaps eat a bit more at meals to counteract the insulin you are injecting
( sorry but don't really want to advise you to change doses )
 
Definitely tell your diabetes team so they can advise you.

It could be because you're still in your 'honeymoon period' and still making some of your own insulin randomly. That gave me quite a few hypos when I was first diagnosed.

Do you count carbs and match yoyr insulin dose to your food? If not, push your team to be taught that as that can make a big difference and is also crucial for long term control.

Test lots and keep hypo treatments near you. Its scary when you have lots of lows, so take it easy and do contact your team for support and advice.

Yeah I have had appointments galore the past month they stopped funnily enough when all the hypos started happening. I will give my nurse a phone on Monday see what she suggests thank you :)

Yeah I count my carbs have been since about week 2 as I wanted to gain control at an early stage. I always have jelly babies and glucose sweets in my bag. Been going through half a bag of jelly babies some days though. I will definately phone my nurse on Monday and see if she has any tips thank you :)

thanks for the replies Ashleigh -- it helps knowing what you know to try to provide further info.

as it is such early days it would be a good idea to invest in a book
Think Like a Pancreas is a good starting point.

also -- one of the things we talk about all the time on the forum is basal testing -- that is where you basically skip a meal to see if your long acting insulin ( basal) is keeping you fairly level.
this is the cornerstone to getting hold of good control.

I would certainly speak to your DSN on monday before you actually start doing this but if you familiarise yourself it is a good start.
