I am new to this forum and have a pending question

Hello folks… I was diagnosed type 2 three years ago and told to take metformin. It was a big low in my life for me. Yet another tablet to take for the rest of my life. I was 59 years old and just recovered from a 3 x CABG. I was also told that I’m obese.. I was, still/am on 3 hypertension meds and statins. So I wondered if I could do something about it. The diabetic nurse said lose weight. So I found out about this thing called KETO, and went straight into it blindly.. Within three months I was not a type 2 and did not need metformin anymore; however I’ve been told they will never take me off the diabetic register. I’m what you call a “Type 2 diabetic in remission”, so I get free eye scans and my feet checked every year. I also have arthritis, uveitis, some auto-immune problem and get fatigue often. This screams out Insulin Resistance, so I was hoping the KETO diet will help pass these afflictions and get me sorted. Sadly just under a year into this way of eating things in my body started to go weird. I had lost 3 stone, but felt tired in the afternoon and never felt alive as so many people on KETO say. As I have hypertension I was very wary of taking electrolytes. I ate a lot of kale, avocados, meat, Himalayan salt etc, so I did not feel that electrolytes where missing from my diet. My hypertension stayed stable but never changed as so many people on KETO say that they do not need so many meds for high blood pressure anymore. I started weeing a lot at night (disturbed sleep) and got bad lower back ache, however the arthritis in my shoulder had nearly gone. So at that point in my life I decided to eat normally.

This was a mistake even though my interrupted sleep had stopped and the pain in my back had gone. Unfortunately within 4 months I’d put a stone back on and my arthritis came back with a vengeance. So I was worried I’d end up as T2 again. This time round I a purchased a KetoMojo and jumped back into the Keto diet armed with keto electrolytes. By day 20 things seemed to be fine I was experimenting with different amount of salt and how it was affecting my blood pressure and how these electrolytes where affecting my wellbeing. By 30 days I was not happy at all with the results. I felt I had taken some very cheap speed , I was literally buzzing and seeing red spots at night in the dark (quite scary) . So I stopped taking the extra salt and the electrolytes. I waited a good week before I made a big pot of beef curry with tons of kale and spinach with loads of beef bullion, (it was very Keto), there was enough for a week. By this time I’d been on the keto diet 30 days and slowly going into becoming fat adapted, the ketomojo meter showed me I was between .5 and 1.5 for the past 3 weeks. So I started to live on this curry and felt fine, until my blood pressure went ballistic. Last Thursday 16th April my BP went into hypertension stage 3, 201/111. I got quite scared and after a few days of it sometimes going down to 157/97 I decided to go to A&E. Weather I did the right thing I don’t know as there this Covid thing around. Anyway they gave me extra meds which only bought my BP down slightly. I spoke to my GP the next day. He just said carry on with the extra meds. But I knew it was not going to work. One extra tablet will not bring ones BP down that far. So last night my BP went 200/110 and at that point (it was 1:30am) I wondered what would happen if I ate some carbs. I rummaged around and found an old jar with lentils in it so I made a small Dhal, ate 100 grams of it and to my horror, surprise, quite pleased within half an hour my blood pressure dropped to my normal of 144/84. What is that all about then???? I’m now not in Keto and I’m quite scared to go back into it… I can’t find anything on the Keto diet causing such a rise in blood pressure. On the ketogenic forum there are loads of post on BP going slightly high but not dangerously high as my readings. There is nowhere for me to go or ask. I think it’s got something to do with insulin resistance, but how do I control this problem?

Hi. Can you clarify what you mean by a keto diet and what your typical meals are?
120grams of fat, 80 grams of protein and under 20 grams of carbs. I kept to 15 grams of carbs a day. I'd eat a late breakfast at 11 am and an early supper at 5pm. That's it.. Very simple food...

You mention using a lot of Himalayan salt? While when you start keto, you lose a lot of electrolytes as your body adapts, you don't have to keep salts at a high level once you've adjusted and gotten past any dehydrating keto-flu... I have to because my blood pressure is naturally low, but if that's not the case, and with you it obviously isn't, you don't need the extra salt. Sorry, not very useful probably, but the best I can do. Hope someone else 'll have better answers for you. (Also, I don't know what you're drinking, but if it's tea with liquorice root, that can also up blood pressure quite horribly. Just in case.)
 
I suspect that you are simply overdoing the low carb.
Can you check your blood glucose levels?
If you try what seems to be a good starting point for a lot of people, eating around 50 gm of carbs a day from low carb veges, having stir fries, roasted veges, salads, along with meat, fish, seafood eggs and cheese, nuts and full fat yoghurt, then testing your blood glucose two hours after eating you should be able to adjust your eating to give good levels of blood glucose.
The diet isn't some sort of magic potion to put you right. Reducing the unnecessary carbohydrate but still feeding yourself properly is the key to the process, and many ordinary but lucky type twos find that their diabetes just fades away. You don't need to beat it into submission with a really radical diet. I don't eat kale and very rarely have avocado - but there are far more foods which are suitable, and small portions of berries can be just fine - not elevating blood glucose levels.

Modern medicine always seems to treat high blood pressure as a disease in and of itself. Got high bp? Here, have a tablet (or two) and just take some general guidance on healthy living, and not too much salt...

Whereas, in reality, high blood pressure is a symptom - a knock on effect of something else.

You mentioned stress. And salt is often blamed. And there are other possibilities, from obesity to lack of sleep, to magnesium deficiency... there are a lot of others.

Likewise, there are other things, from changing/restricting/adding certain foods, or exercise, or meditation, or weight loss, or reducing insulin resistance, that can have a big effect as well as prescription medications.

In my case, I worked out that it was coffee causing the problem. No more coffee, no more high bp.
- and no doc would ever have spotted that. I had to work it out for myself, and if I hadn't, then 4 years later I would still be popping the pills with a dodgy and very uneven bp. I have mentioned it (and the clear evidence stored on my home bp monitor) to 2 nurses and 1 doc. They have all blanked the suggestion, yet eliminating coffee has dropped my bp from highs of 180+/110 down to 120/80. And I only ever drank 1 cup of decaff coffee a day, at breakfast, because I already knew that coffee didn't really agree with me.

So I am not suggesting that coffee is your kryptonite. Rather I am suggesting that there may be ways that you can help yourself in addition to the ways that bp medications offer, but it could take a bit of investigation, and self testing, to find out what it is.
 
Hi and thanks for your reply. I'm dieting in order to get off hypertensive meds. Keto is a very serious thing to do and not for fun. It is used for curing underlying medical conditions. Like the one I have, Insulin Resistance. I agree there is some underlying cause but no one knows. I've had hypertension for over 30 years, and been taking meds ever since. They have slowly increased, and I'm not happy about it. It runs in my family. Both parents and nearly all close relative have had heart conditions with hypertension, and have died from heart failure. Nearly all my cousins and myself have had by-passes due to genetic defect. So it's not so simple.
The West is at a pandemic with Diabetes and Coronary Heart Disease. If you know of a cure I'll be very interested in listening to it.
 
My cure for high blood pressure was having a stent grafted for an abdominal Aortic Aneurysm immediately afterwards my bP dropped so drastically at first they didn't want to discharge me from hospital but my doctor still prescribes me Losartan not sure why.
 
Reading your first post I’d have wondered about kidney, urinary and prostate issues. Also if the fatigue was about not enough food overall.

Did you add, deduct or change anything else at the time BP shot up? New tablets? Different brand? New packet even? Foods, drugs, exercise, stress? I think @Brunneria’s comments may well contain the answer and there could easily be another factor in this somewhere that hasn’t been spotted yet.

How about easing off the keto and maintaining low carb for a spell and see where that gets you. It’ll still help address the bgl, IR and weight just a little more gently.
 
Yep as soon as I upped my carbs my BP went back to normal. So who would want to drop their carbs if it makes one dangerously ill. Yep I'm going for 40:30:30 carbs fat protien. And I'll slowly ease it in. I'm in no hurry...and then maybe 20:40:40 in 3-6 months from now....Anyway thank you all for your input.
