Hi to all,

I have spoken to the diabetes nurse today
and she wants my A1c tested again as the last time I had it done it was 48 but that was last August.

I am trying to eat healthy food but with this pandemic seem to feel more stressed over little things I don't know why.
I have also had lots of joint pain and be unable to undress because of the pain and stiffness.
The diabetes nurse is Phoning me back in 2 weeks time and go from their.

Hi,

Are you on statins? I ask because they can cause joint pain and muscle problems.
Have you got your own blood glucose meter? By testing yourself before and after eating, and at other times, you can judge what your HbA1c may be like - up or down from last time. They give you the chance to tweak your food choices and are the best tool we have for controlling our blood sugars.
Stress is certainly a big factor in blood sugar levels.
Good luck with your next test.

Hi to you Bluetit,

Thank-you for your reply no I am not on statins at all I did try them years ago massive pain in my legs couldn't cope with it.
Yes I have my own bs meter not that its very good sometimes doesn't test at all.
I've just done my bs 16.9 all I had for tea was roast beef and tomatoes sandwiches brown bread and an apple.

What’s the problem with your meter? If it’s broken then I’d seriously look at replacing it and getting ones where the strips are affordable. @Rachox has some info on this if you need it.

How long after eating did you test and what was the level before? You need to test immediately before eating and 2 hrs after. If it goes up by more than 2mmol then there were too many carbs in the meal for your body to cope with. Ultimatum are wanting to get levels below 7.8 on the after meal reading.

The bread will have likely raised the levels quite a bit, wholemeal makes little difference as it has almost as many carbs as white.

As for what is healthy for a type 2 then is quite possibly isn’t what you think it is. Have a read of this link https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/

Thanks for the tag @HSSS , @Sparklebrightisright , here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

Spirit Healthcare have a meter with cheap strips, the Tee2 + found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-plus-blood-glucose-meter/ with the strips found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-testing-strips/

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

With more expensive strips is their Caresens Dual which I currently use, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/collections/caresens-dual

Home Health have recently bought out this one, but I haven’t heard any reviews yet, links to strips and the meter: (See also latest* from HH below regarding discounts for the Navii):

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/glucose-navii-blood-glucose-test-strips-50-strip-pack/

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/gluconavii-blood-sugar-meter-glucose-monitor-starter-kit/

*The latest news from Home Health states:

"We have a special promotion for switching Codefree customers to the GlucoNavii, whereby if you buy a meter with 2 or more packs of strips from the below link and add the discount code "dcuk" at checkout, we will subtract the price of the meter.

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-produ...ose-meter-test-strips-choose-mmol-l-or-mg-dl/

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively (these are printed on a business card supplied with the meter like with the Codefree).

Please note that the 20% discount off 5 packs of strips has already been applied to the meter plus 5 strips price if you buy from the above link.”

And to be totally transparent I used to use the SD Code Free from Home Health which has the cheapest strips available if bought in quantities of 5 or 10 pots with the codes below. However I found it to be becoming less and less reliable. Here it is for anyone wanting to give it a go, just bear in mind it seems they are replacing it with the Navii, details above.

http://homehealth-uk.com/product-category/blood-glucose/blood-glucose-monitor/

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Bread and fruit will put up BG to those levels for many type twos - we just can't eat carbs from grain and fruit and need to go for lower carb alternatives.
