"I love my cholesterol"

Hi all,

I've just been to my doctor....

Blood Sugar levels 5.1 (Achieved by diet only)
Blood Pressure 122/78 (helped by Lisinprol)
Weight 12stone 7lbs (By exercise and being much more sensible re diet etc)

There still is scope to lose a little more weight. I'd like to get to about 12 stone but I'm fairly happy with these figures which are a huge improvement on what I was a year ago.

The stumbling block is my cholesterol reading which was 4.9. The doctor says it's a little on the high side for a diabetic and would probably like me to try statins. I don't think it's necessary just now and, in view of my other figures and general good health, he's happy not to "push the issue" for the time being.

So, in the meantime, I'll try to lose more weight and cut out even more of the naughty things. I've a strong liking for cheese which might well be the cause of my problems here. These days, I don't each much fried food at all or pastries etc and a very small amount of butter/animal fats. So I don't think that's too much of an issue.

Basically, I don't think I'm at that great a risk athough I'd obviously like to reduce the levels if I can. Any more suggestions?

Before you respond, here's a little light hearted relief...

CHOLESTEROL
(Adam McNaughtan)

I've been taking advice on the right things tae eat
Since shortly before I was born
Frae the national dried milk and the cod liver oil
Tae powdered rhinoceros horn
In they days they'd tell us tae lay aff the starches
The sugar, potatoes and breid
Now they've done a U-turn, tell us breid and potatoes
Will give us the fibre we need

So I've made up my mind that the menus designed
By the experts just are nae for me
Nae trained dietician or general practitioner
Dictates what I'll have for my tea
Brown bread with the low fat paste thinly spread on
May be healthier than a meat pie
But who wants tae grow old eating St Ivel Gold
I would raither taste butter and die

Cholesterol, Cholesterol
My chance o' surviving is small
But I'll no' get a dose o' anorexia nervosa
'Cause I love my cholesterol

Now the thing that has brought this affair tae a head
Is a good hearted Glasgow campaign
I just said, What's that?, and the doc had his needle
Sucking blood oot the handiest vein
Two weeks later they measured my height and my weight
And took my blood pressure and all
A computer said, Mate, tae survive at your weight
You would need to be seven feet tall

But I'm not gonnae take the suggestions they make
About changing the way that I eat
Cutting oot cheese and nae chips if you please
Nae chocolate, nae ice cream, nae meat
They tell you to give up these goodies below
And they promise you pie in the sky
Well semi-skimmed milk might diminish my bulk
But I'll take double cream till I die

Cholesterol, Cholesterol
My chance o' surviving is small
The cream I consume that may lead tae my doom
But I love my cholesterol

Now it's a' right for you that smoke 40 a day
And spend every night in the bar
You can tell the health visitor you'll cut it down
She'll say, What a fine fellow you are
But when I tell her I'd never smoked in my life
And I was teetotal tae boot
She says, Go away, there is nothing tae dae
You've nae vices that you can cut oot

Now I don't mind them probing in my haemoglobin
If it's just for a case history
But it puts the health visitor intae a tizz
At her duty to try and save me
She says, Fresh fruit and yoghurt's a lovely dessert
Why don't you give it a try
Well I don't gie a hoot for her yoghurt and fruit
I'll have Black Forest gateau and die

Cholesterol, Cholesterol
My chance o' surviving is small
The way that I dine I'm on course for angina
But I love my cholesterol

Thanks for taking the trouble to post that - it cheered me up :) At my last blood test my total cholesterol was 8.4 even though I am on statins so that poem did me good to read!

John j,

I like cheese also, but like you try to avoid/reduce saturated fat wherever possible, so you could try the half fat cheeses. I like the one from Morrison's, very tasty indeed and cannot taste any difference between this and full-fat cheese.

I'm no expert so can't comment on your 4.9 reading, mine is 4.1 and all within range thankfully, but my gp has never mentioned statins, but not sure if I would take them if he did! :? There are foods which are good at keeping cholesterol down, bran and oats are two, and I eat bran for breakfast most days, but you could try googling this to see what other foodstuff is good also at lowering cholesterol. Good luck! :)

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
An interesting link to a recent story in the Mail regarding new research into cholesterol makes me wonder if cholesterol levels are all down to hormone levels in the brain and nothing to do with diet at all.

Having no energy as this is so limiting.
That article made my eyes go crossed to start with! Quite funny that the reporter didn't understand that HDL is the beneficial part of the equation!

quality! That's why I don't take health advice from tabloids. Isn't the mail the one that comes up with a new carcinogenic every other day? :)
