I need help with this, a bit frightened..

If there's a 15% chance of error in the meter, then how am I to know if a food made my sugar actually go up? Here's my dinner lastnight, and a "snack" of Yogurt (4g Carb. w/0 added sugars) with 1/8 c of chopped raw walnuts. Dinner was fresh Salmon in Olive Oil, w/parsley, onion powder and garlic powder. The roasted in the oven fresh carrots, celery, and brussels. Numbers were: 114 2 hrs after dinner, and 108 before. I didn't test after the yogurt. This a.m. 127. So on my own I would figure I should have tested lastnight 2 hours after snack and dinner.

That 38 seems so low and I'm wondering if yours are calculated differently than mine? The charts I see are saying 100 is in the "excellent" rating? Maybe, like theseView attachment 47471 View attachment 47472 below I just googled recently Andy:
Yes... Different ways of reporting, makes it a little complicated

Hba1c of 38 mmol/mol is equivalent to 5.6% dcct
This is roughly, but it's not exactly translatable to about 6.3 mmol/L which is about 113.4 mg/dL (latter I think are your readings)

If I've got the calculations right that is!

If a reading is only 15% different, the question of whether it’s up or down is a pretty moot point. I wouldn’t over think things.

The 38 is the hba1c in mmol/mol. This is the one which is measured in the hospital and shows an average over a couple of months.
The chart you have there shows blood sugar in mmol/l and %. This is what you can see on a home meter.
I'm sorry, you've told me that before. Are people not testing daily? I just assume those are their own meter readings. I truly am sorry I didn't read, and retain better @Antje77 So my next labwork will be an average of the last 3 months, got it.

I am sorry Andy, I see you guys have told me this several times now so I think I got it now ;)

Assumption I make is that errors whilst unfortunate we kind of have to put aside and just look at the trend, they will also even out over time

So what you are looking for is how you rise 2 hours after eating. Normally the forums say to look for a rise of no more than 2, however I don't know what that translates to in your measurements

2 on your meter Andy? I mean 2 extra, or rise? That's not mg/dl? That's all my meter came with. I had to buy my own so who knows if it's at least within that 15% but my pharmicist said the brand I bought is good (CareTouch).

2 mmol will be equivalent to 36 in your ‘money’ Goldengirl

In this quote the part in italics speaks of hospital tests (hba1c), as he will see again next week. The part in bold relates to home meter results (in mmol/l):
"If I go on my average, I should be a 29 but my last test was 38, next week will see again as am averaging 5.1 on meter, so hoping for 38 again"
I truly am sorry I didn't read, and retain better @Antje77
Don't worry about it, it's new for you and there is a ridiculous amount of stuff to learn. Remember, we have been practising working with all those words and numbers for years, no-one expects you to remember after the first time you've read it! That's just not how learning works ;)

sorry if confused anyone. Not sure I understand it myself, the doctors look at the hba1c, meter readings are mine to look at trends. That's the way I look at it

No worries Andy, I just have to ask. I get it now, your numbers for are for you labwork at hospital. My Hba1c's are in percents and my home tests are whole numbers in mg/dl. I'm just saying it so I get it through my head ;)

About time the world standardised temps, weights and measures !!

Thank you, I appreciate all the info. I started recording day 1, I think because this is the most serious thing that has come up in my life, or at lease one that is something I myself can do so much more for myself than doctors, so far that is. Right now my meals all consist of no "extra" carbs/sugar at all. Only what may be in something like a carrot. I do have one time a day, yogurt that has 5 g total, and I can't seem to find much, if any Whole Dairy items, low-fat this, low-fat that. I have lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks. My daily number are not bad, most in pre-diabetic area, and good area. The more I get used to regular, daily meals (I do tend to eat smaller, but fasting between meals is said to be good, so trying for just 3 a day).

Anyway, I was up at 3:30 this a.m. and got on here and started researching the net. I deal with LPR, and well, seems each thing that has come up in the last 5 years has a special diet and something may be ok for this, but it's not ok for that, lol! Oh well, I refuse to lose my sense of humor :) I do quite a bit of exercise, mostly walking, and I do know that helps with the whole digestion thing, plus I don't mind losing weight, as long as it's stored fat and not lean, muscle-mass ;) Thank you again, Denise

If you want to make it really easy.

Eat only fresh cooked single ingredient food made from meat, fish, green above ground veg and some dairy.
Do that for 3 months without worrying or measuring then have another HbA1c test and see what has happened.

Or you can of course continue to check and measure every day as I and many others do.

Hopefully however the changes will be very similar.

This is basically what I am doing, if not exactly, except I do test so I have something to show the doc if she wants it. I'm no longer trying to figure out the number, except the range they are in is obvious from the charts. I am usually in Good to Pre-diabetic, and I think in the beginning I was in Diabetic range. I do look forward to another Lab work-up to see if it is better than that 7.0 average. That meant I was as high as 10.0, but as low as a good amount of 4.0. I did look that up. Those are the hba1c as I'm sure you know.

I know I say I am no trying to figure out numbers but I love math, so I do it more for that reason ;) Thank you as always, Denise
