Hi there
I am a type 1 diabetic and I want to follow Dr Bernstein's method of treating diabetes as explained in his book: Diabetes Solution. Part of the measures he advocates is the use of regular/human insulin in conjunction with very consistent low carb / high protein diets, since the longer duration of action better matches the longer/slower release of glucose into the bloodstream from a high protein meal.
However, I know that actrapid is seldom prescribed to type 1 diabetics. I assume this is because it is nowhere near fast-acting enough to keep up with the typical British diet high in processed carbohydrates. Anyway, I am seeing a diabetes specialist in a week as part of my routine reviews and because actrapid is seldom prescribed to type 1 diabetics, I foresee that it might be difficult to convince them. I will be extremely disappointed and demoralised if they refuse to prescribe it, since it is an indispensable part of Bernstein's overall treatment plan and I want to achieve those "normal" blood sugars.
Anyone have any advice on how I can convince the prescribing diabetes specialist to allow me to try this? Just an aside: I have been on a low carbohydrate diet for several months and just had a blood test ahead of my upcoming diabetic review. Of course my HBA1c was better than before but also my cholesterol has increased and this has flagged up on the system so I am worried that this will work against me when trying to convince them to prescribe me actrapid.
