Hi Guys,

So as a diabetic i know im supposed to drink at least 2litres of water a day, but every time i try to swallow it i get very nauseous, I just want to throw up. I've tried water with lemon, apple cider vinegar or cayenne pepper with honey but theres no difference.

I feel sick now because of the lack of water in my system and i just dont know what to do, my doctor told me to force it down and eventually i'll get used to it but it's so hard.

Have you tried sugar free squash? Or flavoured water? That's what I drink. Temperature plays a big part in it too.
The colder the better for me.

Sorry, do you have a pre-existing problem with drinking water or is this something new? I have never been told that we diabetics have to drink 2L of water a day.

Are you trying to drink too much at once?

Hi Louisa,

I've never heard this advice before, as far as I was aware as long as you regularly drink fluids then you should be ok.

I know when your levels are high it's advisable to drink fluids to flush the kidneys, but in general if you have a cup of tea or even coffee that's ok, Water really is the best thing to drink though as no carbs, good cleanser etc.

Have you tried flavoured teas ? I drink alot of Green tea with lemon - about 8 - 10 cups a day and it's quite nice, honest !!

I'll be honest and admit I drink very little water-diet coke probably makes up 95% of my insides! But when I do like squash though so try drinking that, or some lemon or lime wedges in water?

I also have never been told to drink water I just drink tea and a glass of no added sugar squash during the night if I ever get up.

Hi Louisa :) This tip may sound silly but have you tried drinking water through a straw, it may help :) I can gulp my water down but my fiancée has the same problem as you and she says sipping water or any liquid is easier to stomach if done through a straw. Hopefully helps you :D

I drink a 2 litre bottle of diet coke/pepsi max if that counts, I too have the same problem but i've had it all my life. It's as if my brain is expecting a flavour to come when I drink something, and if it detects no flavour it sends the signal to my body to not drink it and try not to throw up. I don't see the difference between carbonated water or still water with flavourings, if anything it's good for you.

I used to be the same, id have a small glass of squash and it would last all day. I forced myself to and now I drink loads. I always have a drink in me. When I finish one I immediately refill my glass/bottle and I find using a straw helps.

I now drink on average 3 litres a day ... That seems much higher than the 1.7 guidelines, do you think it matters?

I don't exactly drink water, i have my daily fluids through drinking squash.. and soda stream which can't be good for me but hey ho it's still drink!

I find it hardest to drink water when my bms are high as i get a nasty taste in my mouth

You dont have to force yourself to drink anymore than you normally would.
I don't remember the last time I had water on it's own actually!

Just go about your normal routine drinking as usual.

When my bm's are high I literally drink so, so much. Until i'm bloated horribly or feel ill. I end up sleeping it off because it's so uncomfortable!
