I'm not happy I don't want to have diabetes

Just to help, here are the NICE guidelines that the NHS uses for type 2's

Fasting and before meals 4 to 7mmol/l
2 hours after eating under 8.5mmol/l

These levels are a little outdated, and many of us aim for under 6 fasting and pre-meal, and under 7.8 at 2hrs after first bite. Others aim for less than that.

THANK YOU for that....seems I have lots to learn - kind regards for taking the time to send me a message. Meels

My breakfast generally consists of a combination of three of the following:

200g Farmers Union Greek Yogurt, 8 strawberries, half an avocado, an egg, 4 prunes (though never strawberries and prunes both for breakfast).

On the weekend I have a slice of Burgen Soy-Lin bread with either vegemite of peanut butter.

I sometimes also have a mixture of about one dozen almonds & walnuts.

I won't eat any cereal. Simply do not feel comfortable eating it.

This morning, because I am away from home I had a fry up which included bacon, 2 poached eggs, spinach, mushrooms and half a Spanish sausage (that choice was probably not a good one). I asked them to hold the toast & baked beans.

Hi and welcome.

Give it time, and you'll experience a kind of attitude shift.

You'll go from 'but I can't eat that any more!'
To
'Oh wow! I get to eat these? Guilt free?'

Have a look:

Not that I want to force you to eat cake all day!
But it is worth knowing that the good food days are NOT over.

And once you get your blood glucose levels under control, your going to feel like a different person.

Mells,

I think baked beans are generally fine. I've just made a decision to not eat them. Try and test - you will probably find they have little or no effect on your blood sugars.

Heinz do a low sugar baked beans. I have tried both the normal and the low sugar. Terrible spikes, so I have never dared try them since. However, that was quite a while ago, so I am intending to try them again for lunch next week with a poached egg and 1 slice of my toast and butter. They are so good for you in other ways it's a shame not to be able to eat them.

Thank you bluetit1802 I am very grateful for yr reply. I haven't ever had a reading below 5. M.mols - which Was fasting. - they mostly seem to be between 5 and 6.2 mmols different mornings - and after food on a two hr check they vary up to 8.00 m.mols. Only once did I have a reading of 10 mmols but can't remember why that might have been as it was just as I had started using the monitor . So not having got below 5. Mmols at any time - something in my regime is still lacking I presume. ?
Since I started to make the effort to lose weight I have lost approx 10 lbs - so maybe as it goes down VERY slowly - maybe that elusive reading will appear. Can't quite give up my glass of wine with my evening meal but it's mostly red. I live in Portugal now and the wine is just great - so on the balcony with an evening meal it's almost part of it . ! !!!!
On the plus side the fresh fruit and veg is so available - but my fruit intake is pretty much berries as they have always been my favourite - but it seems apples and pears are not a bad thing either ? Certainly yogurt - another favourite - gets added to the fruit. I have also tried corn bread rolls and that seemed fine.
.so my other half made something like a a rock cake with corn flour including unsweetened muesli with nuts and dessicated coconut and honey. No Ill affects from that either and they were scrummy.! I find whole meal bread and similar too heavy but have found a good compromise with eight cereals and oilve oil included in it's making - that seems to be fine but I don't have it or carbs everyday. I have read the post from dianagrace I'm quite exhilarated as I've cut both cheese and butter out of my weight loss challenge. I love cheese ! So that's been like a penance. High protein is frequently mentioned so does that mean full fat cheese - if so- is there any best to avoid still? And without being silly of course is there a guideline as to portion size. Still so many questions I'm getting boring I'm sure so I'll stop. Many thanks one and all for helping to lift the fog - I'm getting there and the forum is a brilliant advocate .

One thing to remember, @Meels19 is that if you test a food and get a nasty spike, you should try the same food again with a lower portion. Then if necessary, try again with a lower still portion until you arrive at a portion size that you can cope with. This helped me discover I can manage 1 slice of my bread with a meal, not 2 slices, and not on its own without other food. Also the same thing with potatoes. It is all trial and error and learning, using your meter and food diary.

Why would you want to get under 5mmol/l at this stage? Anything up to mid 5's is perfectly normal for non-diabetics before eating. Try not to set yourself too stringent a target initially as you may get demoralised, although of course, the lower the levels the better. The lower readings will come as you lose weight and get your diet right.

As for red wine, this is the best alcoholic drink for us. As long as you don't over do it. Personally I have a 200ml glass about 4 or 5 nights a week.

Thank you for your welcome Countrykins, I thought I was doing ok...these readings are high then low, so it tells me I am doing something wrong. Size 10/12 good on you, I was never sylph like always been a bit tubby. My sister is a tiny size 8, what's that all about? guess I inherited this from my mothers side of the family - I took a reading before my lunch and it was as low as 4.8 - now that confirms these funny spells I've been experiencing ready to do another reading in an hour or so to 'see' what they are, I've just been thinking how clever the human body actually is....I am sorry I've been abusing it or years - good luck, be happy and seems we are all a mission - Kind regards Meels 19;)
Well Meels u achieved something I haven't done as yet - I.e 4.8 mmols. , wonder how it was on your next check. Pardon the pun - but there's so much food for thought on reading the posts -but Im getting to like the choices more and more .

@Meels19 You don't have a problem living in Bury. The market there has one of the best meat and fish halls in the country and some excellent fruit and veg stalls. All you need to do is learn a bit about different food types and you can prepare very tasty meals. Your meter will, over time, teach you what foods you can and what foods you cannot eat.

They do a decent fish pie mix at the market, much chaper and better than the supermarkets. I use this for fish stews and fish curries. It's better than rabbit food and, if you are careful with what you put in, these dishes won't raise your BG levels.

If I have a curry, I usually use pearly barley as a rice substitute or use Morrisons converted brown rice. A serving of that only has 15g of carbs which is perfectly OK as a main dish of the day.

You can also eat things like beans and lentils as they are only partially digested and are broken down by bacteria. Consequently, they give you a bit of wind, but are kind to your BG levels. Spices such as corriander, cumin, cinnamon, chilli, turmeric, garam massala and garlic all make a humble plate of lentils into a cheap, nourishing and tasty meal.

Or try chicken and spinach curry, you can get good chicken bits at the Bury Market.

Yes I am finding this out as we speak .....fascinating how your body tells you something is wrong - Meels

Ok - thank you again- this is all brought about thru complete lack of knowledge I guess - so where would folk like me be without this sort of back up. I'm certainly grateful for your input .
It's all very well being given a diagnosis by a doc. - but apart from being told to lose weight sometimes it needs a bit more of an explanation to help understand from that professional . Especially when there's no history of diabetes within my immediate family.
I have a friend who is type 2 diabetic and tiny. She lost weight from 75 kgms down to approx 54kgns which suits her size and BMI I imagine but she is still on metformin. So just weight loss did not get her off medication. Guess that's why I am still wanting to understand what should work for me hadn't for her - It's a really in depth subject isn't .
I'm having ratatouille for tea I'm told ( my other half is the chef in our outfit !!!) All fresh veg from the farmers market this morning - and my glass of red wine !! Thank you again.

It's also amazing that you can find lots of suitable things to eat at restaurants. At the moment I am holiday in Melbourne attending the Melbourne Film Festival so trying to fit appropriate meals in at the best of times can be challenging.

Luckily, Melbourne has lots of great restaurants around and I have had some delicious low carb meals.

For example chicken with chick peas. And yesterday for lunch char grilled lamb cutlets with a large serving of green beans with tomato.

Tonight we went French and I had 1 dozen snails covered in herb butter and garlic. I did cheat and had two small pieces cut from a bread roll to soak up all that butter. For main I had a snapper with peas & lettuce as well as I side dish of a different style of lettuce and onion.

I am tempted to do desert but decided against this - don't regret it either. All this was washed down with a nice glass of red wine and a bottle of mineral water.

I've been on this low carb diet for about 5 weeks now. I have lost about 5 kilos and I don't eat the big meals I used to eat. Getting down an average size meal is a challenge and that's fine by me.

Also, one night we were in a part of town that has nothing but junk food. But we were prepared. Took some plastic containers with cheese and nuts. That got us through the last film.

Beans, for me have little effect in moderation, it is the horrendous sugary sauce that the tinned variety tend to have that raises the BG:eek:. So what I tend to do is make my own, with a lower carb sauce:)
