I feel that my hospital treatment was unfair. I was treated for pneumonia and was discharged as being diabetic. I was injected with meds and told to stay on them until my regular dr's visit in 2 days. Is it possible to get off the metformin and glipizide pills and begin my new lifestyle or is that it I'm tagged.

On a positive at least you were diagnosed!!! You could have been like others here with really high levels and still not getting the correct treatment from their GP's.....

There is a chance to come off meds. If you are overweight, followed a low carb higher fat diet and exercise then you would stand a good chance of reducing or coming off meds.

However, this all depends upon your 90 day hba1c readings coming down and on your current health and fitness levels and your BMI.

Lots of people get diagnosed whilst being investigated for another illness and many people get no help at all from their GP's despite being off the scale with their readings.

Its no good whinging over how you were diagnosed. You have been and you should be actually grateful that somebody has diagnosed you. Now at least you can do your best to help yourself and your diabetes.

Are you a healthy weight?
Are you eating carb laden food?

What dietery advice have you been given?

The answer your looking for is yes!

But, and there is a way of getting real control of the condition. You and only you can go on a reduced carb and sugar diet. The only reliable way is to reduce your weight if you need to, and control your blood glucose levels. The forum is full of experienced diabetics that have been where you are now, the success stories are illuminating and impressive.
You will have to educate yourself and decide the best way to get a grip of the condition. By trial and error, you can do it!
The meds will help you get the help you need to get control, once you have, you can gradually reduce your meds. This is not an immediate thing that will happen, it will take time and patience.
A chance for a better future with your health. If you really want to.

It is not a quick fix, it is a change in lifestyle. The rest of your life!!

The other option is not really worth thinking about.

Hope this helps.

It must have been a shock to have gone into hospital with something like pneumonia and then come out with diabetes. Maybe your levels were so high they had no option but to start you on medication? At least you were given your diagnoses by a medical person, the receptionist told me! This was then confirmed by the practice nurse.

As the others said, look around the forum and see the advice and also diets and recipes. Well worth hanging around!
