my husband is injecting insulin twice a day(mixture of fast and slow acting) he's got a bad cold so his levels are very high.he's thinking about having an extra dose now or increasing his evening dose, would that be dangerous?Thank you

Thats what i would do. Every time Im unwell i need to increase insulin. If you monitor sugar levels every few hours it shouldnt be dangerous.

Dont know on the mixed one sorry. Taking fast and slow acting seperately generally advised to increase by 10~20 % when ill and monitor and adjust depending on levels. Hopefully someone on mixture will pop along or phone dsn for advice

Hi descot. I'm on a mix twice daily and because I have been unwell this week have increased both my morning and evening dose by 2 units. I checked with my diabetic nurse and she said it's ok to do it. I would suggest that if he's not already doing it, he monitors closely at least until his BG settles.

Thanks everyone! We were panicking cause he was on tablets for a long time, only just started insulin a few weeks ago so we're not very familiar with it. Didn't want to call nenedoc cause it usually takes more than half an hour to answer irrelevant questions to end up talking to someone that doesn't really know about diabetes. He did increase it but still a bit high(around 14)hopefully better tomorrow. Thanks again

Hi again descot. I should have mentioned earlier that he also needs to drink LOTS of water, at least 2litres a day. It too will help reduce his BG levels. If it doesn't come down tomorrow increase his insulin a bit more and continue to monitor. High BGs make us feel so horrible..... Nausea, headaches, blurred vision, tiredness, irritability, all on top of the rotten common cold symptoms! I hope he will feel better soon.

Thank you, someone told him that dehydration is responsible for the fact that insulin isn't working properly so he's been drinking loads of water but as you know being high makes you wee all the time... he's managed to talk to a diabetes nurse and she said that he could have an extra dose of 10ml(in the morning he increased it by 4 units but nothing really happened)he's still 14 without eating that much.Luckily temperature's dropped so hopefully everything will go back to ''normal'' soon. It's quite frustrating cause on top of all the extra symptoms that you've mentioned he hasn't been able to eat much cause he's been so high.

Hi descot, I put a message on the topic your husband posted earlier today. The fact that he isn't eating is really nothing to worry about right now. Our body is overloaded with glucose and the last thing it needs is us giving it more! I know that when I'm high I have no appetite anyway. I'm glad he was able to speak to his diabetic nurse this morning. Best wishes for a speedy return to normal and hopefully a Merry Christmas :)
