Hi my son is age 20 and has been a diabetic since the age of 6. He is using Humalog mix 25 insulin. He injects this twice a day and is currently on 38 or 39 units each time. Lately this doesn't seem to knock his blood suger levels down properly. He also uses fast acting insulin as well when needed. We do not understand why the insulin isn't working properly any more, any suggestions. We have increased his insulin by 2 units in the last week ?

It may be that the insulin is spoiled ? do you have a new batch you can try ?

Hi. Has your son gained weight over recent months? If so he may have developed insulin resistance and hence need more units. If that is the case then try to reduce the carbs a bit. I'm no expert on insulin and you have to be guided by your DN, but if your son is using rapid insulin it might be worth discussing changing the mix insulin to a daily one such as Lantus or Levemir to have as well as the rapid i.e. a Basal/Bolus regime. This might give a bit more control as each insulin does a different job and can be adjusted independently?
