Insulin on the Bernstein Method

Messages

Hi everyone

I am a type 1 diabetic and I am interested in moving onto Dr Bernstein's famous method for blood sugar control, as outlined in his book: Diabetes Solution. This, however, involves using human "regular" insulin, as he calls it, for my bolus/rapid-acting insulin doses. He is an american doctor and thus he uses american terminology for everything including the american insulin brands.

For the majority of my 15 years as a diabetic, I have used Novorapid as my bolus/rapid acting insulin. But I have had difficulty in obtaining this so-called "regular" insulin he talks about. I am presently aware of 2 brands which conforms to the "regular" label: Novolin R and Humulin R. When I attempted to order these from the doctor, Novolin R didn't exist on his system and Humulin R had a "do not prescribe" notice next to it due to high cost. Is there any way I can obtain this "regular" insulin so I can comply totally with his method? Or perhaps there is a more easily available regular insulin brand in the UK that I am not aware of.

Thanks for reading.

Actrapid is Regular insulin made by Novo. A of T2s still use it. Should be easily available. The main difference is acting over 8 hours, which is more suitable when eating ketogenically. I also find Actrapid useful for filling the basal gap wwith using Lantus.

Thanks for replying. Heard of Actrapid but didn't know it was regular insulin. :)

I have never used insulin, but I am an enthusiastic (pre-diabetic?) low-carb-diet disciple of Dr B. The most recent edition of his great book came out many years ago, so unfortunately it can not be always up to date. For updates see his numerous Youtube videos. Although now 85, he still gives an hour long Q&A session towards the end of each month. The October one has just appeared, but you could send in your query for the November one. He is aware of the differences between the US and UK terminology and does the computations between mgd/dl and mmol/L in his head on the spot (not bad for 85, and more than I could do!)
I did a quick search and found this page: maybe you can find some guidance there. Good luck!

And if you use the search function of the forum with actrapid you can find many posts talking about it
