Hi guys, im new on forum, without diabetic so far but : im 9 months after pregnancy with around 50 kilo more. I went to gp ask for insuline resistance test as i cant loose weight and he said to me that in uk they are not checking insuline and of my glucose intolerance test in pregnancy was ok ( sugar after 2 hours was quite low and i collapsed after) everything is ok and he gave me orlistat pills for loosing weight). Now my question is if really i cant check this insuline level by any how? Thanks

hi,
I don't like the idea of Orlistat. it seems to me very simplistic to assume that preventing absorption of fat is good for you even if it does reduce weight. All the research seems to suggest that it is easier to lose weight by restricting carbohydrates than by reducing fat intake either naturally or by artificial means. I know for me personally and a few others on here, our health problems now seem to have been exacerbated by eating low fat diets before . I bought some Orlistat myself before diagnosis and then binned it when I had looked at the research in more detail.

If you want to lose weight why not try out dietdoctor.com which is very informative concerning low carbohydrate diets?. You can easily check what is happening after meals and to your fasting blood glucose with a blood sugar monitor available on amazon, many on here use the codefree meter because the strips are cheaper and can be bought in bulk if you find you need them because your blood glucose is too high.

I tried every sort of diet on medical advice, nothing worked other than low carb. All the low fat advice I got is just wrong - it is carbs which made me fat and cutting them drastically has a remarkable effect.

Thanks guy for replays and informations. Just im still wondering if this what gp said about not checking insuline resistance in uk is true?
About low carb i heard that when u got problems with weight since childhood(like me)u should be carefull cause it can not work on u. I was trying lchf and during one week my weight went up 3 kilo. So i gave up thinking why this what is working so good on the others not working on me? As well like diet made especially for me by clinic dietetician. After many research i found out about insuline resistance and just wanted to exlude this but gp told me like i said above. So im very confused and thinking to find private laboratory but if gp is wrong i dont wanna pay a lot for testes i think i should have for free.

I had a weight problem since childhood - low carb worked so well I was losing a kg every day on 20 gm of carb and I had to increase the carbs to slow it down to something I could cope with. That was a long time ago, but going back to low carb after diagnosis with diabetes has worked well once more, though with less effect on weight - but I am so much older now.
If you are insulin resistant then lowering carbs is going to be the way to treat it - but doctors are not exactly well disposed to testing for reasons for not losing weight. They have always known better than me why I do not lose weight on standard calorie controlled diets.

Plifka - Have you had your thyroid checked recently? The inability to lose weight can be a a symptom of low thyroid performance.

Hi. Yes, insulin resistance or levels are not normally checked in the UK. Your best approach is to have a low-carb diet. As you have had excess weight most of your life it may not be adequate but always worth trying first. Be aware that many dieticians don't understand diet! They tend to follow popular low-fat, low-sugar, low-salt mantra which has a very poor evidence base. Many of us would say to focus on the carbs which are really the villain for high blood sugar and weight gain thru fat deposits. I am aware that for some people weight gain can be caused by the body's inability to control appetite and treatment can then be difficult but try a low-carb diet anyway. A good start point might be 150gm/day of carbs. and even less if you can do it. Have enough proteins and fats to keep you feeling full.
