Insulin Resistance is not the culprit. overeating is.

Has anyone mentioned water retention yet? This can be influenced by hormones and will affect weight without changes in food intake. BTW I never ever think calories, I only think carbs.

A bit of a double edged sword here.

For me, it was as easy as cutting calories.
Cutting a lot of calories, but, at the time, very low fat, (very low carb, very low protein, very green leaves, very, very, boring)

Hi . I'm not over weight my bmi is 23 . But for me to get my levels down iv had to go on a low carb diet . It has worked for me I still eat grain but only whole grain . I think it's finding out what works for us . I think me and you have been luck in the fact that we have found a solution . Maybe for some people it's just harder . Hope you can find some thinks that you like to eat and that you can keep things under controlled . For me I hope I can keep it up as iv was only diagnosis 3 months ago . And like you iv found it hard to find things I like that have no effect on me .

I was overweight at diagnosis.
Massively.
Over my life, I was active, and worked, ate, played, etc.
Not overweight.
But then management happens, so the work decreases, and you go out with the 'boys' and still eat and play.
(Just I payed on expenses, rather than my boss, and I didn't move as much anymore)
And the weight creeps up.

And the desk is appealing, and the money, so eating and drinking takes over.

Then diabetes happened, so I figured,when I wasn't fat, I wasn't diabetic.
So a massive diet, as I said, simply low calorie, and my diabetes is much improved.
I won't say cured, but, my risk of complications is down there with non diabetics, and that's good enough for me.

my 4 aunts are diabetic. They (all in their late 70s),don't eat much at all. never been fat in their lives. thin as rakes.

on the other hand, one aunt who died in her 50's of diabetic complications was slightly overweight & my mum who is 83, diabetic for almost 30 years isn't even on insulin, is actually obese but with very little complications.

with this disease..honestly, who can tell?

No it's not always!!!! It's really not. Why did I lose more weight on 2300 calories than 600 then?
Because the weight loss shows up ten days to a few weeks later. As does the weight gain. Don't ask me why. There must be some complicated explanation. But I have always noticed this.

Nope not in my case. My weight and diet had been stable for 7 months, I did the five day fat fast and lost a pound a day plus an extra one. When I stopped the weight stabilised again at the new low. If this were the case surely I would have put on weight unexpectedly a few weeks later?

Certainly in my case, with carb related changes.
And probably as my body uses the glucose in the easy to utilise water stored reserves, then as it depletes weight goes down, but then the body shuffles things round a bit, and replenishes the reserves, and water gets stored again, with a weight increase I'm not expecting.
Even eating fat, odd things seem to happen, as my body uses it's remaining glucose stores first, then starts to rebuild them from any protein I eat. after I get used to burning fat. But that is my speculation, but it's fairly predictable.
Like I always say, in my case, the only long term way for my to lose weight, is to eat fewer calories than I burn.
Nothing else works for me.

Yes the eating fewer calories than we burn is the obvious bit, and that's where I started 30 years ago. It did work for a few years, then my metabolism suffered from cutting down too much, so now I am gradually increasing the amount I normally eat. I couldn't go on reducing my food intake and exercising more and still not losing weight, I kept catching every bug that was around and was still morbidly obese. So now I'm eating more fat and less carbs to lose weight. I'm at my lowest weight for 10 years, so at last it's moving in the right direction.

Same here! Unfortunately my metabolism is too good - if i cut down too much on calories it goes into survival mode and tends to slow right down to the extent that it starts shutting my body down which makes me v ill and unable to function but also unable to lose weight. Since I've been eating low carb full fat I've lost 3 stone - I've also started taking medication for underactuve thyroid which may have also helped.

Oh I'm so pleased that you've found the right answer for you too. :) It's so hard when you're struggling to lose weight and nothing works.

Thanks - it was 34 years ago that i was told by a consultant that I was one of his few patients that could honestly blame their metabolism for their weight and that, despite trying to eat fewer calories, I'd find it extremely difficult/impossible to lose weight and my metabolism would always 'scupper my attempts' particularly as my thyroid couldn't make up it's mind what it was going to do ie be under or over. He basically told me that the only thing to do was to eat healthily and wait. 33 years later it decided and my GP was finally able to begin prescribing medication. I think it's a combination of the LCFF and thyroid treatment that has done the trick. I still need to losea little more weight so I'm hoping my metabolism hasn't realised yet that I've managed to 'circumvent' it's efforts to thwart me!!

My mother is a serial dieter in between carb binges and although not obese, can sometimes creep into overweight. She obsesses about her weight so much that I have never done a calorie-controlled diet.
Although I have diabetes and my metabolism is broken, I can lose weight on LCHF by tweaking carbs and so far x fingers haven't regained.

Not an expert but I think the body stores fat easier as we get older, maybe that's why........??
Dawnmc I find stress plays a huge part. You might not realise but your stressed getting the kids ready etc... well I do. I've been stressed most of my life. Just realising now. I would need a stress free life to lose weight. That's never going to happen.

I can honestly say I live a fairly stress free life. If anything stresses me out its watching the news and being too involved in politics hmmm maybe.
