Hi all

Is there a way to test insulin resistance? I've looked online but can't seem to find a simple blood test for this, does one exist? As a type 2 will I always be insulin resistance or can it be improved? My hba1c are normal but worried my insulin is still high

C-peptide test will give an indication of how much insulin you are producing, you will want to know your blood glucose concentration at the same point in time. There are a couple of different ways of doing C-peptide tests. You might struggle to get one on the NHS.
 
Hi, well done on the Hba1c.
There is not a simple test but a combination of tests all of which are not normally done for a diagnosis of T2.

However an insulin levels test as part of a full blood panel test. Or a c-peptide test, to see wether you have normal levels.

If you do have insulin resistance, the likelihood that there will be, higher than normal insulin levels and that is not good.
Circulating insulin levels is cause of T2.

Usually as your Hba1c levels comes down, your insulin levels and your insulin resistance decreases. Dietary control is the best treatment.

I would advise about asking your GP, but in the present circumstances, I doubt that you will get priority anytime soon.

The HOMA-IR formula calculates your insulin resistance. You need your fasting insulin and glucose from a blood test. There are calculators such as here: https://www.mdcalc.com/homa-ir-homeostatic-model-assessment-insulin-resistance
 
Hi :) Good work on the Hba1c ! Here in Saskatchewan C-Peptide tests can be done but can usually only be requested by an endocrinologist. The problem is, here in Regina, we only have one excellent endocrinologist and he has a 3 year waiting list!!
You can travel to Calgary or Edmonton to get the tests done(8 hours to Calgary or Edmonton by road)if you have permission from SaskHealth to do so but your chance for approval is between slim and none.
