Apologies if this has already been flagged up, though I can't find it anywhere :)

Horizon tonight is presented by Michael Mosley (of 5:2 diet fame) and is about whether or not red meat (and by extension, saturated fat) is good for you. The Daily Wail recently published an article by Mosley in which he appeared to be saying that, as a doctor, he had always been anti saturated fat but that he now believed that sugar was the real villain and that we could wade into butter, cream, red meat etc. with a degree of impunity. Being in the Mail, I suspect that there might have been a certain amount of, erm, editorial tweaking, to fit the slant that the paper wanted his article to take, but it was interesting and thought-provoking stuff. (That's not to say that I don't think sugar is villainous....)

The article by Mosley, flaghttp://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/bbc-2-tonight-at-9-00-pm-the-big-health-dilemma.63240/ging up the programme (here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-28797106) suggests that we may see a more balanced view tonight. Much though I'd love to be able to eat lots of saturated fat with a clear conscience, what I really want is a clear exposition of the facts, so far as they are known. In any event, I'll be watching with interest.

(Edit: Just found this: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/bbc-2-tonight-at-9-00-pm-the-big-health-dilemma.63240/ . Beaten to it; and probably in a more appropriate forum, as well. Never mind :))

Hi Jay

I listened to an interview with Michael Mosley on the radio this morning and found it interesting when he said that he had not followed a total true meat diet and a lot of the meats he ate through his testing were processed meats eg sausages, burgers etc

Lol didn't read your post to the end! ;)

I'm just watching catch up tv with "the food we eat" programme.

I get more surprised everyday on how bad eating habits are now....i really did not realise that only 1 in 6 people cook meals from scratch.

I knew my veg when I was young.. Kids not even knowing the names of vegetables...

And as for microwaves.. Mines used to warm up coconut oil if solid!!

My mum and dad worked full time, but I always had fresh prepared meals... Are lifestyles so changed now?

I'm just absolutely staggered.

Fully agree, really scary.

Yes one in six was just amazing ......we all worry about our diets here and getting it right , then we see society today ......
Makes me think we all do pretty well which ever diet pathway we follow ....

Totally agree with this
And mam and dad made sure we all could cook too.
But there were some and still are some men of the older generation who have no idea lol,
A true story a few of us went self catering for a week in Portugal, one of the gang who's in his late 50s went to the shop bought some baked beans and then asked us how to cook them, he was serious he's always had someone to look after him mother, girlfriend, wife.
We asked him how he coped when his wife wasn't there he replied I know how to make toast.

Meh, program could have been cut by half if they had cut the completely unnecessary investigation into how red meats may be bad for you (if eating loads of bacon every day kills you faster, then you don't need to know if it's the fat or the EAHs or some other obscure chemical - you just need to eat less bacon)

Why don't they make a serious program about what really causes diseases like CVD with all the new sciences, showing that inflammations caused by high blood sugar and omega 6 fat.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that quite frankly they don't seem to know the answer half the time. There are so many variables in people's lives how on earth can you ever track any particular group? So you get them eating more red meat but some might smoke, some might not, some might lead stressful lives, others not, particularly in the case of religious groups like Adventists. They didn't even touch on whether the red meat was good quality or Tesco Value, nor mention very low fat alternatives such as venison and game. Hmmmm.
