I am a new member and was diagnosed with diabetes just 7 days ago. It is still sinking in. I have other issues medical such a vitamin D deficiency, anaemia and I have hit early menopause too. I had my gallbladder removed 5 years ago. My doctor and diabetic nurse have been amazing and are giving me great support but think I may be a type 1 not 2 diabetic. I am currently on Metformin 1 tablet a day for 1 week moving to 2 next week. I am also on Vitamin D and iron tablets. Both my mother and farther had and have diabetes. My mum died 3 1/2 years ago due to her having heart problem brought on by uncontrolled diabetes she was 73. I found the website by chance but now feel I have somewhere to go to gain help for people who live with diabetes.:):)

My Doctor told me to join this web site

I would not worry to much at this stage and trust your doctor, I have stage 2, which I think I may have had for over a year, but I have only been diagnosed by the doctor for about two weeks, so I am not far ahead of you in diagnosis.

I have noticed that on the first day of taking my tablet, my glucose went from 30 to 10 and I now manage to regulate albeit erratically between 5 and 8 sometimes more or less. Eating less but more often 6 times a day works for me, so generally grazing slowly through the day, I am at early stages so it will take a while to get to grips with all of this tooooo.

OK I say this because If I take the medicine my sugar level drops and if I forget my morning tablet, even a small breakfast can result in a glucose level of around 10 or over from about 5 before breakfast.

I am on Gliclozade, so I guess this is currently doing its job. If you feel your medicine is not making a change, then you must go to the doctor to check if you are type 1

I like you will probably be seeking many answers on this forum as we learn to control our exercise or dietry needs, I wish you good luck.

Regards Woody

Don't panic, you are not alone here. I felt that way in 2005. There are many of us with experience to help you adjust. I have had my own miseries but I am here to help you. Are you insulin dependant? Are you on tablets. In all instances do not get complacent. Diabetes will hurt you regardless if its extent.

Hi My Name is Paul, Hello to all on this Forum

I have recently been diagnosed as having Type 2 Diabetes, which I think I may have had for about a year and a half, shortly after I was diagnosed as having high cholesterol just over 2 years ago.

My blood sugar level was about 3x higher than it should have been and during the first week and a half, it has been shall we say interesting to see how quickly my blood sugar now goes too low if I am not careful, now that the medicine is helping to prevent the high levels.

A little about me? Read on if interested Lol.....

What sex am I? I am a male, Paul is not the name I use as an alternative to a female name :)

I was born and bred in the UK, but I think my nose probably says my ancestors where Roman!

I am not religious in the usual sense, my base beliefs as a guide to life is Christianity, but I believe that God if it exists did not wait until 2016 years ago to show himself and if god does exist, god was around a very very long time ago before little planet earth showed up. I don't think god considers humans to be any more special than all the other animals that came before or after the planet earth appeared, so we should be nice and just get over our superiority :).

Three words to describe myself..... Patient, Loving, Annoying.

MS Windows for price, flexibility, USB drag and drop and upgrades to system, Mac so annoying and yes I do own some annoying Mac stuff!!

I cycle sometimes, Have a motorbike, sadly currently off the road. I like motor racing, but Gran Tourismo is about as far as I get in taking part.

I only get angry at dossers who sponge of the state for a long time with no reason!!

Had a dog once called Bungle, because we answered an advert saying dog free to a good home, they opened the door, thrust the dog into our hands and closed the door, she was only a few weeks old and had to be bottle fed, she was a little bundle of fluff, so hence the slight name change to Bungle, we had her for about 15 years, miss that dog so much still 15 years later.

No tattoos etc, but may get one when I am 50, any suggestions based on my 3 word description of myself?

Favourite bands :- Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Rammstein, Dio, Whitesnake, Mamas Boys, Girl School and many more, but I also like old school pop, some modern pop and classical sometimes as well as War of the worlds musical.

You guessed it, I like Rock music most of the time ;-)

Just about on the right side of age 50, I am married to a wonderful Filipino woman called Anilyn, who I met about 12 years ago, We have a baby girl called Tala (Bright Star in Tagalog Language) who is now 15 months, going on 15 years and now knows more about computers than my Mother already!!

Fake Tan, No but maybe I need one so that I do not look like a thermometer turned upside down when I am bald, too much info!!

I have travelled all around the UK top to bottom and to both sides, I have relatives in the Philippines and Switzerland, so they are free of hotel requirements :) I have also visited parts of Spain and Pathos as well as France. I have relatives in America, Australia and New Zealand, but have not travelled there yet!!

I love Birmingham City and also Manila in the Philippines, it is so varied and a crazy city and it has travel by JEEPNEY so funny for a 6ft tall guy to travel on :)

Proud of the England Flag as well as the Union Jack and the Flag of the Philippines.

Been camping in a tent and also caravanning, all are good fun especially if the tent is at a festival.

List your five favourite TV programmes. Sarah Connor Chronicles, Anything Sci Fi even if it is bad and funny

List your five favourite films :- Avatar, Star Wars, Time Machine (old version), Hell raiser and most horror films, love the old classics with Vincent Price etc. Oh and I like comedy.

Are you wealthy? I wish, but I am not poor ;-)

Do you work? If so, as what? I am an Architectural Technician working on fairly big stuff from distribution, factories, schools and offices.

List the subjects you study/have studied. Building Studies, computer programming in Cobol and Basic, Desk top publishing, Engineering studies and the usual school projects, where Physics and Technical drawing where my best subjects. My worst subjects where English and Maths, as the Welsh Physics teacher said "Looks like a spiders crawled all over it"

What do you like most about yourself? Generally a very friendly reliable person.

What do you like least about yourself? Mmmm Talk too much when it is not needed and type too much.

More (OMG Shut up man) :-

I like a beer more than the recommendations, but not 10 pints a night, so this needs more work to reduce, feeling sad....

I like ice cream and cake, Oh Cack...

Before getting Diabetes as I have said I was diagnosed with Cholesterol. I loved peanuts, biscuits, mashed potatoes and cheese etc as well as egg custards, bread pudding and more, but not on the same plate !! (showing my age with the puds)!!!

After diagnosis of high Cholesterol I cut most of the bad saturated fat and increased my good fat and over two years I went from 106kg to my present 89.9kg (16 St 9lb to 14 St 2lb in old money) So about 16 bags of sugar lost!! :)But maybe some of this loss was down to un controlled high blood sugar levels. I am 6ft tall, so soon I will be at the weight I should be for a healthy range, unless I put it back on!!!

I still eat the puds every now and again and CHIPS!!! I guess my puddings will now be smaller.....

I do not want to diet for both Cholesterol or Diabetes to lose the last 5+ bags of sugar :) and I accept that it is a life style change to balance what my body needs to control both conditions, so my weight will lose slowly, I guess I cannot diet as such anyway....

I spent a lot of time balancing my Cholesterol, but now it is my sugar intake I need to balance, which now brings me to the current problem and me joining a forum, that I never knew existed.

I look forward to being part of a community, which in an ideal world should not need to exist :)

Regards to all, Ingat Ka Palagi as my wife would say, meaning take care always in Tagalog.

Love a beer myself, but I have to be so careful not to push the envelope.

Hi, I'm new to this app and I have managed my Type 1 diabetes for 55 years this month. My only noticeable complication has been erectile dysfunction which is not so terrible as it would be for a younger man. My greatest recommendation to all Type 1s is to take the Dafne course if you can. This old dog learned a few new tricks!
How do I send this?

Hello,
I'm Jenny.

Mid 70s going on 16
Type 2 Diabolic , diagnosed 1990. Metformin, at first, then insulin as well and finally adding canalgiflozin in the last year.
I usually have good control , but started with stomach and digestion problems ,gradually getting worse. I was taking 3x850 mg tablets /day and my GP raised the question with my specialist... who sent him a quite snotty reply.
My specialist changed the metformin for Bolamyn SR 500mg, 2 capsules , twice a day . The results have been much better , No more explosions ,down below and the indigestion was reduced.
This is where it gets complicated :

Because my husband and I are much better in temperate climates with clean air, after working hard in grimy Leeds, with it's appalling winters, we now spend the worst part of the winter in the hills of The Algarve . My GP would only allow us 2 months advance supply of the Bolamyn and I have not been able to build up a stockpile to bring out here.

My Portuguese GP advises me that this particular medication has not yet been approved for prescribing in Portugal.

Can anyone advise me if it is possible to buy this , or something similar, over the counter, in a Spanish or Gibraltar Pharmacy.
I'm considering substituting one of the Bolamyns with a normal 500mg tablet, to stretch out the supplies.

Any advice would be most welcome .

Hi, my name is Leonie Cameron. I am a 64 year old woman from Adelaide, Australia and I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes approx 2 years ago.
I was travelling overseas to the USA and was feeling some tingling in the bottom of my feet. As I had previously been a
nurse I knew this was a sign of diabetes. However I was worried about my blood flow so went to the doctors to check prior to going overseas on that long, long flight.
I advised the doctor myself that I thought it might be diabetes but was advised to travel overseas and then go back to see him
when I returned.
I had a great holiday with no worries except my feet being sore when I walked too much.
When I returned I went to my doctor and was tested for diabetes. Yes I had type II and was immediately put onto Diaformin.
I had my referrals to the dietician, the podiatrist and the local gym for excercise.
I am not the best at eating properly but do try hard. I guess because of my age it seems not as urgent for me, however sometimes I feel I need to do better so I am looking at ways to improve my eating habits and I feel discussing it with others can sometimes help.
Thank you for allowing me to join up.
